Visiting Switzerland from India during Christmas on my honeymoon. Never been to Switzerland and need to know if this is a good time to visit Switzerland, and any tips to make the trip worthwhile?

Planning to visit Zurich, Interlaken, Jungfrau, Zermatt and Lucerne!

  1. i think Christmas is a magical time in Switzerland... it's a beautiful country year round, but with fresh snow and holiday spirit abound, it really feels like you're transported into a Grimms' fairytale.  it's true, it is very cold; it would feel especially cold for you if you're coming from India.  the lowlands like Zurich/Luzern aren't going to be too nice... Swiss winters are famous for their icy fog and low hanging clouds (and you may not see sunlight until noon, and usually 2-3 hours if you're lucky).  most of the time, it would simply be cold, damp, and (if winds are high) very gusty.  but for me, i like the moodiness of a gray winter (obviously, you may not).  up high in the alps like Jungfrau and Zermatt, you'll see more sun, probably about 6-8 hours a day.  however, this is also very dependent on weather; i spent Christmas in Wengen last year, and of the week i was there, i think i only saw sun 3 or 4 days (and some days, the town was completely in the middle of clouds and falling snow).  but imo, it's all worth it when you're hiking through the high Alpine woods, completely silent except for the fresh snow crunching beneath your boots, fresh powder on the pine trees all around, and babbling brooks forming long icicles along their edges... it's romantic, and what a winter should be.  (in fact, i'm spending Christmas in Wengen again this year.)

  2. If you like snow and cold, this will be fine.

Need heavy winter clothes, specially in Zermatt and Jungfrau.

Below freezeing temperature in the mountains.

  3. I am sure Zermatt and Jungfrau will be nice since there will be snow. Anywhere int the mountains it should be beautiful and full of tourists!   Zurich, Interlaken, Lucerne...I am not so sure about.  It gets cold, gray and simply nasty during that time, especially if there is no snow, but rain instead.   I would certainly do some serious research about what area you want to visit in Switzerland.

  4. Too bloody cold and expensive!

  5. plan on being cold. Learn to ski. Switzerland has the best skiing in the world!!!!
