Once receiving a visitor's visa from Jamaica to the United States, can you stay as long as you want up to 6 months? Can the time allotted to visit be limited to less than 6 months and how does one find out how long you will be able to visit? Please let me know your experiences. Thank you for the information and excuse my ignorance on the mater.

  1. You are usually allowed to stay up to 6 months at your discretion. Any time over that will be committing a felony.

  2. Typically, the immigration officer will determine the length of your stay. If you have a ticket for a 4 month stay, they will definitely ask you WHAT you will be doing on vacation for so long. They will evaluate your answer and weigh it against any other info on their system about you, including any prior visiting history.

They may also have access to info about any local (USA) relatives and thier travel behaviour. All information is wieghed in thier decision.

If they give you less time than you need, you can actually apply for your stay to be extended at a later date.

  3. The amount of time you spend in the US on a visitors visa will be at the discretion of the immigration officer in the US.  Generally they will give people who are not deemed to be 'flight risk' or regular travelers up to 6 months to stay. However, they may give you less, as little as 30 days.  And it doesnt matter if your ticket says that you can stay for 4 months, the immigration officer will give u more or less if he wants to.

Please note that even if they give you up to six months, i wouldnt advice you to stay for that period unless you can explain how u can be 'visiting' the country for 6 whole months.  They will assume that if u r in the country for that period of time then u r working and it is ILLEGAL to work on a visitors visa.  If u r underaged or elderly you may be able to stay for a lenghty period of time since u would be too young or old to work, however if u r of working age u will have to explain to them how u can get so much time off from u job her in jamaica to 'visit' the US for 6 months.  If they think that u were working then u may have problems reentering the US in the future.

  4. The short answer is that immigration may set any time limit it wishes.

The longer answer: A visa is not an automatic entry card contrary to popular belief. A visa only allows you to get the entry port (airport) and request permission to enter the country. You request permission by presenting your visa and other documents to the immigration officer. At that point the immigration officer may either grant you entry or deny you entry.

If granted entry, the length of stay is at the immigration officer's sole descretion.  Having said that, most often, you will be allowed up to 6 months or at least the length of time your ticket is booked for.

  5. Well your gonna have a to buy a ticket and set the date when your going and the date when your gonna come back. You don't have to stay for 6 months and if you stay over 6 months you'll be illegal in the United States cause your a visitor from Jamaica. Your not suppose to over stay your 6 months. So you pick the date. Just buy a ticket and pick the date and then you'll be set and ready to go.
