  1. Important updates:

Usually security or core functionality related.

    1. Security meaning that they address weaknesses to outside attacks/viruses/backdoors (although you need a good antivirus to protect you, the updates just close easily exploiteed vulnerabilities)

    2. Core functionality are things like browser updates that address compatibility issues with websites or system components that are flawed

Recommended updates are things like newer versions of internet explorer, windows media player, minor improvements to the junk mail filter in outlook.

These updates are supposedly improvements (although not always initially due to buggy releases) but not essential.  For example you can still use IE6 or Windows media player 9/10 rather than the newer versions and they will work just fine.

  2. important updates are for security and things that affect all vista machines, recmmended are for things like language updates that may not affect every machine or user

  3. Updates come in three flavors. The first are Important, or Critical, Updates, which are necessary to install in order to fix security holes or major issues within Vista. The second type is Recommended updates, which are updates to various components of the operating system that should be installed for proper functionality. The last type, called Optional Updates, are new features, updates, or Ultimate Extras that are not necessary to install for proper functionality of the operating system or applications.
