All professional film editors use Apples and none used Microsoft OS.  The use the iMac desktop or Macbook Pro laptop.  For film editing iMac is the best. If your question is what laptop is best for film editing, the answer is a MacBook Pro by far.  There is currently a student discount that will not only save you $200,but also enable you to receive a free iTouch IPod (value $299).  Vista is generally considered a worse OS than XP.  It also still has problems with incomplete video an sound platforms, software applications that work for Windows are a great deal more inferior on Vista than Leopard Applications on a Mac.

Vista gives an end user no reason to upgrade in my personal opinion.
