I have 2 XP computers and one vista computer. They are all in the same network, the xp's work great with each other. I made sharing folders in both of them. Vista is being a pain....

On the 2 xp computers I can see 3 computers in the network. I can interact with the other xp computer great, but I cannot access the vista files, when I try to it gives me this error:

"//pc name is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have accessible permissions. < a bunch of line breaks> The network path was not found."

On the vista computer its even worse I can only see the vista computer in the network. I set the network sharing, file sharing, and public folder sharing on. And the printer sharing (don't even let me change it) password protected sharing, and media sharing off.

please help

  2. Since it looks like you are new to networking, you could try the network setup wizard in xp. This can create a file that you can run on all computers in the network.

    Vista has tighter security features, so under the network settings, you should enable file sharing, printer sharing etc.

    In a home peer-to-peer network, you must create the same username/password on each computer. Then you should also decide who had access to each share on each computer.

    Vista has additional trouble-shooting tools and help files. Vista also lets you see your full network map. You can also download a patch from microsoft and install it on each vista PC. This patch lets you see the full network map of all pc's in your lan from the network console.

    To simplify things, look at windows home server.

  3. Get LanHelper to do an IP scan or LAN scan to find all the computers whthin your local network.

    Some tips from www.hainsoft.com

    ==============================

    Specify credentials

    Provide a username and password to logon to remote computer. Generally only members of the Administrators group on the target computer or Domain Administrator are authorized to perform operations such as Remote Shutdown, Remote Execute, etc.

    To a Windows XP computer, you may need to configure the Windows XP system so you can remotely log on to it successfully. On Windows XP system, click "Control panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Local Security Policy>Local Policy>Security Options", in the right pane double-click the item titled "Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts." The default option for this is "Guest only - local users authenticate as Guest." Switch this option to "Classic - local users authenticate as themselves." If the account has a blank password, it's recommended to set password to account. Otherwise you should disable this security option "Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only". A restart may be required for the changes to take effect.

    Sometimes some policies will also cause the logon procedure or other network operations failed. On remote computer's system, click "Control panel>Administrative Tools>Local Security Policy>Local Policy>User Rights Assignments". In the right panel, check these two items "Access this computer from the network", "Deny access to this computer from the network", whether the account you provided in Security Credentials dialog have been added to them.
