  1. First of all, your friend is partially correct. Products are now produced to be compatible with Vista, and therefore may have some issues working on XP. Secondly, as both an XP and Vista owner I have found that working with Vista is not only less time consuming, but much more enjoyable. Many people who say bad things about this new OS have absolutely no experience, and are just following what other people say.

Granted Vista has some bugs, it has a ton of useful things and styles that a gaming computer would be aptly equipped for.

As for your network card, make sure it's an N-Draft. This is not a brand but rather a specification. These kinds of cards are able to maintain a stronger connection from a further distance.

    Good luck and happy hunting!

  2. Any regular network card should be fine. Personally I recommend a NETGEAR product.

  3. XP has been EOL'd (End-Of-Life'd), so getting XP might be hard to do anyway. And you may have trouble finding XP drivers for your new hardware.

What your friend means is that only Vista supports the newest version of DirectX, and game-writing companies will be writing to that version soon. (But there's been enough resistance to Vista in the gaming market that I don't believe the game-writing companies will be abandoning their XP-running customers any time soon.)

Most mobos come with integrated NICs nowadays; I doubt you'll have to worry about that.

  4. I dunno about the network card but GET XP!

It's sooo much better than vista, vista pretty much sucks it doesn't matter as long as you have good graphics cards.

I'd recommend you to build it yourself or get it custom made at a locally owned comp store or something like that.
