i bought the dell inspiron 1521 laptop and it come with Vista. I have a built in microphone in my pc and i know it works because i can record voice clips on msn successfully. But, on speech recognition the program asks me which kind of microphone i will use and i don't have these either of these 3 options! I try them all but it is not able to pick up my voice! should i just get a microphone?

  1. but you do have one of the 3 microphone types.....hang on till i load up recoginition.....ok from :

    /control panel/speech recognition/set up microphone....

for an inbuilt mike like on your dell choose other

it does say on my vista at least that thats for inbuilt mikes....and it worked on my lenovo, so good luck.

I will say however, that the speech recognition software, is iffy, some days it works well, and others not, I guess it depends on how drunk I am....

Oh and it picks up background noise a lot of the time, but I'm not here to review it, just to answer your question, which I hope I have...

POSTSCRIPT: sorry just re-read your question and noticed that it says you have tried all three options....

so lets check your mike levels and see if that helps...

ok, so lets go back to

    /control panel/speech recognition/

at the bottom of the window that appears, you will see under more options the choice of Audio devices....Select this.

This will bring up the SOUND box, we want the recording tab so select this...you should see your microphone at this point which hopefully has the word working under its description.Select your microphone (mine is a realtek HD audio, but DELL may be different) and then click properties.

there is a tab for levels, select this, after ensuring on the general page that the device is selected as enabled under use this device....crank your mike level to max (100% (On mine I have a boost bar too I have this set to 0% still as if I raise it too much I get Terrible feedback (Lenovo speakers being at the front of the machine - go figure)))

apply the changes, and presto, your mike should be working....any further problems don't hesitate to ask.
