  1. The first thing to do would be to try out another operating system. If your internet connection isn't too slow, you should try downloading a liveCD that you can boot to desktop and it will test your computer. (There's a menu at the top, you can select 'system/administration/hardware testing'.).

If the CD loads nicely and has no trouble with your hardware, then you should install it - you can dualboot Vista and Ubuntu.

If you're interested, I Zipped around 256 files onto a flashdrive - a 1.8GB file. I started Vista, and it took around 17 minutes to unzip to desktop. I rebooted to Ubuntu, and unzipped the same file in LESS than 1 minutes.

Try it out, maybe it's your operating system and not your computer - if it is, then you could think about reinstalling!

If you SHRINK your vista partition, and leave maybe 50GB free unpartitioned, then Ubuntu would fit very nicely. I installed it on my school library computer - it took 20 minutes to completely install and detect all hardware - ready to use. After that, another 25 minutes to download updates, and it's ready. Search internet for 'ubuntu'.

Try this search - google it 'enable advanced desktop settings ubuntu'

Seriously, I thought Vista looked quite nice, but the WOW stopped there. When I started with Ubuntu, I just started saying WOW every day - and everytime I come home from using Windows and boot up my ubuntu, it feels like hmmmm coming home??? I say 'Wow' every day - and so do all my friends.
