I am considering a new computer but find that most come loaded with Vista, I would prefer to keep XP as I have heard that there are potential problems with Vista. Any thoughts on this?

  1. i got my laptop a year ago with vista premium installed, as far as i can tell it works exactly the same only its presented a bit different everything is where you expect it to be, there are a few fun gimmics like multi screen, but if you can get xp on it for cheaper then go with that, its your choice.

  2. I'd still stick with XP--or ditch Windows entirely and switch to Linux, which you even can get preloaded on some machines now.

I got a call from my sister last night with a Vista network problem that I couldn't help with.  Some recent update from Microsoft caused a bunch of applications not to be able to talk to the network.  We tried uninstalling and reinstalling the network drivers, and it didn't help.  She's going to have to try reinstalling the applications to see if that does any good.

IBM still has no plans to use Vista on its desktop machines internally.  I won't be surprised if they ditch Windows entirely and switch to Linux for business use.  They've been using Linux increasingly for server applications, and they have a huge project going on right now to move thousands of Linux servers for customers onto big z/VM systems.

  3. XP. the newer Vista is a product with more unnecessary works on it, cooked up in America. ( I dont think it's u-tube the older lad is wishing to have)

  4. I'm a vista fanboy now! took me a while as I'm a gamer and wanted the extra performance xp gives. but having had it for a while now i can say its better than xp. boot up time is alot quicker for one thing, everything runs smooth as silk. i love the way when i overclock my graphics card too much (i'm sad)!! the pc wont shut down, just say an error message and return to default settings.

with sp1 all the bugs seem to be ironed out so you may as well take the plunge.

also the firewall and windows defender are excellent, ive tested them and used third party ones and no difference.

it is a bit of a system hog though, im using 890mb ram just to run the desktop and type this so make sure you have at LEAST 2gb!

  5. i have xp my dad has vista. i can not rap my head around vista its not user friendly so xp for me untill they sort it

good luck i think some plases do sell new computers with xp you just have to ask

  6. Go for Vista

  7. Personally (I have Vista) I would choose XP certainly. I cant download Flashplayer for instance so cant see anything on YOUTUBE.

  8. I own both Vista and XP machines and dual-boot Vista and XP on a couple of them.

I prefer XP, it provides much better performance, particularly in startup time. However, for a new machine, I would get Vista pre-installed. Microsoft has stopped support for XP other than security-related issues. Also, most hardware vendors will eventually stop offering XP device drivers.

Microsoft is a monopoly. You can't fight the b*st*rds.

Some manufacturers are selling XP "downgrade" packages for machines that ship with Vista Business or Ultimate pre-installed.  I bought that package for a Lenovo Thinkpad that I bought a couple of months ago. Hence, I can run XP now and re-install Vista when I need too.

  9. Vista

  10. I prefer Vista. Currently with a lot of updates and Vista SP1, it's quite OK and never gives me significant problem

  11. vista is an upgrade of xp soooo yeah.

  12. XP

  13. All of your new computers will have Vista loaded on them.I doubt that you will be able to find a new pc with XP loaded on it so just go with Vista and be happy. As of august 2008 xp will no longer be produced but will still be good for at least 7 years

  14. The colours better on xp

  15. Vista Basic. Too many Quirks in the Ultimate.

  16. you have heard wrong.

as with ANY new OS  there will be a few bugs but vista has now been out for about 2 years and works BETTER than XP

  17. Vista still has some compatibility problems with some older hardware and software, and it needs at least 2GB of memory to thrive (XP is fine with 512MB).

If you don't like the "look and feel" of Vista, that's no problem as it can be customised to your preferences. You can make it look more like "classic" Windows (95/98/2000) if that's the look you prefer.

You should at least give Vista a try, if you can, before dismissing it entirely. That said, if you prefer XP then that's fine too. XP has the advantage of having been around for years, so all of the little niggles and bugs have been ironed out by now.

Heck, I'm still using Windows 2000 on one of my PCs, and it's absolutely fine for my needs, so I'm in no position to talk.
