Vistamar boys volleyball team defeats Pasadena Poly by 3-1
The Vistamar boys volleyball team was successful in securing themselves a seat to the final of the CIF Southern Section Division V.
Vistamar achieved this credit by defeating Pasadena Poly on Tuesday in a thrilling match that went on for four long sets.
The semi-final between the two teams was played at Hawthorne High. Both Vistamar as well as Pasadena contested each set of the game ferociously. The first three sets were highly competitive but the fourth one saw a drop in the motivation of Pasadena that
resulted in Vistamar winning the final set of the game by a comfortable margin.
When Vistamar had started celebrating their well deserved win over Pasadena by screaming their throats sore and as the losing team was heading out of the court cradling their disappointment, the scoreboard read: 23-25, 25-21, 29-27 and 25-17.
With their recent win, Vistamar has been able to improve their overall number of wins to a figure of 22. In addition, they have suffered two losses as well.
The first set of the match started off with both the teams locking together in a fight to win the dominance of the court. Neither Vistamar nor Pasadena let the other team take the lead for a long period of time.
Both the teams stayed almost neck to neck with each other for most part of the first set of the game. However, as the match reached its final stages, Pasadena was seen to push past ahead and finally bag the first set of the game at 25-23.
The loss of the first set sent a much needed wake up call to Vistamar. They were able to step up their game and rally together in an effort to put up a considerable challenge for Pasadena. As a result, Vistamar was able to secure the second set of the match
at 25-21.
With the scores even, the third set was intensely contested by both Vistamar as well as Pasadena. The struggle between the two teams was so fiery that there were a total of 14 lead changes during the entire third set. However, the team that was able to pull
off a win in the end at 29-27 was Vistamar.
After such a win, it was not a tough job for Vistamar to bag the fourth set of the game at 25-17.
Coach Alec Gilliland of Vistamar made the following comments about the match once it had reached its close, “That's one of those games where I think back and I can't even remember what happened. There's situations in matches where when you have an experienced
team like we do, you just have to sit back and have faith in them to pull through.”
