Vistamar loses in a clean sweep to Lighthouse Christian - Volleyball news
Vistamar of El Segundo played a volleyball match against Santa Monica’s Lighthouse Christian on Wednesday, October 5. The match was part of the Coastal Athletic League girls volleyball mayches at the Betty Ainsworth Sports Center that is located in Hawthorne.
It did not take long for the match between the two teams to reach its close as Lighthouse Christian was able to make a clean sweep over Vistamar. The first set of the match started off with both teams almost level with each other but as the frame reached
the final stages, Lighthouse Christian was able to gain dominance and bag a win. The second set saw the Vistamar side slow down and Lighthouse Christian took advantage and got to a 2-0 set lead. Vistamar was seen putting in an increased effort in the third
set and they fought until the very end but Lighthouse Christian proved to be the better side as they were able to seal the deal on the match at the following final set scores: 25-20, 25-16 and 25-22.
The coach of the losing team, Alec Gilliland, made the following comments after the match had reached its close: "We just missed way too many serves. We're normally a pretty good serving team, but each game we had more than five errors on serves. We really
kind of shot ourselves in the foot, especially when we're losing games by four or five points. Those are all points you're giving away for free.”
On the other hand, Emily Hamilton, the coach of the winning team, expressed herself in the following manner: "We got beat a couple of times recently because we didn't finish games. I was really glad to see our girls give a strong push near the end of games.
We missed 20 serves a couple of weeks ago, but today we missed five…But we've been hammering on consistency and mental toughness."
The first set of the match reached a tie at 12-12 but Lighthouse Christian managed to take the lead soon afterwards and race on ahead to bag the set at 25-20. The second set saw Lighthouse Christian take the lead from the start and stick with it till the
end at 25-16. The third began with a Lighthouse Christian lead at 6-2 but Vistamar was able to close in the gap. However, Lighthouse Christian sealed the deal on the final set at 25-22.
The player that was able to lead Vistamar’s scoring line was Leila Nathan as she was able to make a total of nine kills and 12 digs for her team. Nathan was helped by her team-mate Natalie Stephanus, who was able to put up a total of eight kills for her
team.
