Vitaly Petrov: Higher qualifier positions crucial for Monaco GP street track – Formula 1 news
Renault Formula 1 driver Vitaly Petrov has said that the qualifiers of the Monaco Grand Prix will be very crucial for better performance in the race on Sunday.
The Russian added that the Monaco layout does not support a lot of overtaking moves so once a driver gets higher position in the qualifiers, it will be hard to overtake him in the entire race.
Petrov stated, “It’s a different type of race, a one-off. Qualifying will be very important. If you don’t qualify well, it makes it very difficult to move up a long way because there are not too many overtaking opportunities.”
Monaco Grand Prix is the first street circuit on the 2011 Formula 1 calendar. With its squeezed turns and different structure of track, not a lot of overtaking has been seen in the past.
However, the 2011 regulation changes have changed a lot of history on the previous five races of the season. Already a record number of overtaking moves have been seen in this season which was the promise of the Formula 1 world to its fans.
Petrov also thinks that the Kinetic Energy Recovery System and Drag Reduction System will work well in the Monaco race.
The Russian commented, “We have the KERS and Drag Reduction system (DRS) to deal with so there is considerably more for a driver to think about in the cockpit. At the moment, it is good having them (KERS and DRS) because it helps the overtaking considerably.”
He further added that apart from the DRS and KERS, the fast degrading Pirelli tyres will also play a key role in the outcome of the race.
In the Spanish Grand Prix, Petrov was not able to cash a golden opportunity to score some points when he started the race from sixth place but slipped out of points and ended in 11th.
The season continues in Monte Carlo, Monaco on May 29, 2011. Let’s see if Petrov manages to impress on the weekend.
