Vitaly Petrov excited about the 2011 Formula 1 season
It was recently revealed that RenaultF1 decided to join hands with Group Lotus, who parted ways with Team Lotus after a lot of conflicts and controversies. The two companies are still literally fighting against each other over the rights to the name “Lotus”
and it seems that this matter cannot be resolved without a verdict from the court.
However, soon after Group Lotus joined RenaultF1, the team decided to change its name to Lotus Renault GP and confirmed Robert Kubica for another season. Vitlay Petrov on the other hand was still hanging by a thread but recently, he called a press conference
and revealed that the team has signed a contract with him that will stay in effect until 2012. The young Russian driver was extremely happy about this deal and he vows to perform his best next season. He said in an interview,
“It feels great. I learned so much this year and I know that I can come back stronger in 2011. I’m extremely proud to be part of this team and I’m determined to repay the faith they have shown in me.”
Even though the 2010 Formula 1 season was his debut season in Formula 1, Vitaly was able to give a decent performance but he was unable to score points consistently throughout the year.
Petrov was unable to prove his worth until the grand finale in Abu Dhabi, where he held the former Renault driver and two times world champion, Fernando Alonso behind him for almost 40 laps. As a result, Fernando was unable to score enough points to maintain
his lead and thus, Sebastian Vettel won the race to become the 2010 Formula 1 champion. Nevertheless, the 2010 season was pretty decent for Vitaly Petrov. He added,
“There were a lot of special moments. The race in Shanghai is something that I will always remember when I overtook Schumacher and Webber to score my first points. Then, the first time I made Q3 in Turkey was an important step for me.”
Since Renault is his first team in the sport, he enjoys his time with the team and stated that the team is helping him a lot. He articulated,
“Yes definitely. Previous drivers have always said that there is a special atmosphere here and I have to say I agree with them. The team is very warm, friendly and open, and I get on really well with the guys,”
It would be interesting to see how Renault performs next year with Group Lotus by their side, as most of the professionals are expecting a very good car from the team.
