Vitaly Petrov says Renault took big step forward with their car in Belgium GP – Formula 1 news
Renault driver Vitaly Petrov has said that his team took a big step forward in the 2011 championship battle at the Belgium Grand Prix on August 28, 2011 at Spa-Francorchamps.
Petrov added that he was encouraged with the proper working of the new upgrades, which the team have delivered to their R31 car for the Belgium Grand Prix. In addition, he stated that the new updates support him throughout the race weekend and especially,
during the raceday as he successfully finished his race at the ninth place.
The Russian talked to the media and mentioned that after the Belgium race, they are very close to Mercedes GP at the moment in the championship battle. However, he added that they need to fight in the same direction in the rest of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Petrov commented, “Our strategy was good, however we lost out on our top speed which meant I found it very difficult to overtake. The car was very strong on the corners, and we were very good on the brakes until I had issues at the end.”
The 26-year-old driver went on to mention, “For the final laps I was driving differently to compensate for the brake concerns, but unfortunately I spun right at the end as I had totally lost my front brakes. Looking at the performance of the weekend, overall
I'm quite happy.”
The Enstone-based outfit driver also said that the team’s strategy was good during the race and that their R31 car was strong on the high-speed corners of Spa-Francorchamps.
He started his Belgium race from the 10th place on the opening grid and after putting all of his efforts he came at the ninth place ahead of Williams Pastor Maldonado in the final race classifications at Spa circuit.
After the race, Renault driver added that he is quite happy with his Belgium race results and now, he is looking forward to successful race weekends in the rest of the ongoing season.
Let’s see how Petrov performs in the upcoming Grands Prix of the 2011 Formula 1 season following his top ten finish in Belgium.
