Vitaly Petrov says Renault will fight for constructors’ title – Formula 1 News
Russian driver, Vitaly Petrov thinks that if he and Nick Heidfeld consistently land among the points table, they will be able to give their team a chance to chase the constructors’ title.
Petrov added that Renault is progressing well in terms of development but the Mercedes team is becoming a threat with every passing race.
Renault team enjoyed smooth sailing in the first couple of races, with two third place podiums. After that, Mercedes and Ferrari team started to claim their rightful position at the top, making it tough for the Renault team.
Vitaly Petrov stated, “It’s very important to get as many points as we can for the team and to fight for the constructors’ championship. Mercedes are now quite strong and taking some points, so we must try and stay ahead of them.”
Talking about the Turkish Grand Prix, Vitaly said that his incident with Michael Schumacher in the opening laps of the race was unnecessary and cost him some important points.
Petrov and Heidfeld landed on the podium in the first two races of the season due to the fact that two of the major Formula 1 teams, Mercedes and Ferrari, were conventional in their 2011 car designs.
As soon as both legend teams brought some innovative ideas in their cars, Renault went down on the points table. The third podium finish of Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso in the Turkish race saw the Spanish team move ahead of Renault team in the constructors’
table.
Petrov explained, “F1 never stays the same, it is always changing. Things change on a daily basis, with teams building new parts and working on new aspects. In Turkey, Red Bull were quickest, but before that McLaren won and of course we’ve been third quickest
in two races,”
He further added that Renault will also be bringing some new upgrades for the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix. Petrov thinks that development work will speed up among teams, as Formula 1 is a sport which sees new changes.
The Formula 1 battle will continue in Barcelona on May 22 and hopefully, Renault will put up a good show against the likes of Ferrari and Mercedes.
