Vitaly Petrov says he was fighting for a good finish in Canadian Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Renault driver Vitaly Petrov has said that after a long red flag due to heavy rain in the 2011 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, he was pushing for a good finish for the team.
Petrov had a positive race weekend in Montreal after his violent accident in the last Monaco Grand Prix. The Renault driver showed a strong progress in the Friday practice session. He started his qualifying round with hopes of securing a pole place for the
race day. However, due to an unsupportive role of the R31 car, he could not do so.
Before the start of the race weekend, it was believed that he has a potential to finish his race on the podium. However, when heavy rain split the race into two parts, he could not maintain his pace on the wet Canadian track.
The 26-year-old driver discussed the Montreal Grand Prix and said that after the race restart following the two-hour break, he tried to do better on the grid. However, the supersoft tyres did not provide him an easy run and due to that, he ended up in fifth
position.
Petrov said, “From then on, I was fighting for a good position. On one hand, finishing fifth after starting 10th is a good result but, on the other hand, I really feel we could have finished on the podium today. That said, I welcome these extra points, and
I think we're back on track after a couple of difficult races.”
His teammate Nick Heidfeld suffered an accident shortly after the race restart. The contact led to his retirement from the Canadian Grand Prix.
Heidfeld discussed his accident and continued, “I was behind Kamui and then something happened. He slowed down suddenly and I hit the back of him, which resulted in my front wing coming off and me going off the track. I was on track for fifth and some good
points.”
The team driver was disappointed with his Canadian GP results, as he was expecting to score points for the team over there.
After the Canadian Grand Prix, Renault are hoping for some more points from the next race of the 2011 Formula 1 season in Valencia.
