Vitaly Petrov says no ‘low-fuel wonder’ works for Caterham at Barcelona – Formula 1 news
Caterham driver Vitaly Petrov says that the team was not running a qualifying-style lap on first day of the final test held at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona after getting contained by 1.7 seconds of the quickest time.
Petrov said that the team still needed some improvements in the car after driving the car on the first day of the third test. He set the ninth best time of 1 minute 24.876 seconds on the super soft compounds. Furthermore, he said that the team took out very
little fuel during day one.
“It's not true, just maybe a little (fuel).” Petrov said. “But still we never tried qualifying things or even close to that so we still have quite a lot of fuel in the car, which is good if I want we can go much faster. Not much faster, but we still didn't
try the qualy, we didn't try close to this setup to be in qualy mode. So there's still a lot to come, and I hope that with some upgrades we can still have some in Australia.”
Petrov completed 123 laps during the first day of the test and the day proved out to be the most productive day for him. However, 15 minutes before the chequered flag, the car was stopped on the track during the test run.
Furthermore, Petrov stated that he thought the team was still behind from the other contenders during the testing session and there was a need to make some strong efforts to reduce the gap in the performance of the team as compared to its rivals which would
not be easy at all.
However, he said that the team is working on many issues and trying its best to make the significant changes and improvements in the car to get prepared for the forthcoming season opening at Melbourne, Australia.
Moreover, Petrov said that the team would have a new member, John Iley from McLaren to work for the aerodynamics of the car and the team hoped that it would help in increasing the downforce of the car.
