Question:

Vitamin D supplements/drops for breastfed babys?

I've been breastfeeding my baby for 5 weeks and plan to breastfed until she's about 6 months old. My question is for mothers that breastfed their babies. Do you give your babys vitamin D drops? If so what kind? Do they have any aide effects? My doctor hasn't mentioned anything about vitamin D supplements or drops. I live in Orlando Florida, and we're not in the sun too much occasionally but not a lot. I do take a multivitamin not sure how much Vitamin D is in it though. Does my baby need vitamin D drops or vitamin drops?

  1. Our pediatrician recommended it if breastfeeding (tri-vi-sol has Vitamin A, C, and D) and our son has been taking that since he was 1 week old.   It certainly does not hurt, so we figured why not?  No side effects and our son loves it.

  2. my dr suggested them but i decided against them.

  3. My dr told me to give them to my son but i didn't.

  4. My daughter is 3 months and my doctor has now suggested I put her on vit d. I would just make sure ur baby is old enough.

  5. Vitamin d supplements are for exclusively breastfed babies or babies who recieve less than 17 ounces of formula daily. i'm really surprised your dr has not mentioned it to you. i used enfamil tri-vi-sol and there are no side effects.

  6. My daughter is 5 1/2 mos old and gets the Tri-Vi-Sol drops as recommended by the pediatrician.  She has been getting a full dropper of it daily since she was 2 weeks old.  I don't know if the pediatrician suggested this because she was born in February in Wisconsin...I am still giving her the drops until he tells me otherwise.  We take vitamins, why shouldn't our babies get the benefits of vitamins?

  7. My doctor recommended that I give my baby vitamin supplement (drops) at her two month check up. Since I don't get her out in the sun very often, I thought it would be a good idea to give her the supplements. My baby is very fair skinned and the sun has been too hot to get her out. My doctor recommended I get Tri-Vi-Sol which is a combination of vitamin A, C & D. I give her the drops everyday and I have not had any side effects. I put the dropper in her mouth and she sucks on it. I think she likes the taste of it. I bouth the Tri-Vol-Sol at Walgreens our local pharmacy in the vitamin isle.

  8. You don't need to be in the sun for extended periods of time for the body to naturally make Vitamin D.

I think the number is like 30 minutes in the sun a week.  That's less than 5 minutes a day.

I didn't give either of my boys Vitamin D and the doctor has never even brought up the notion of vitamins.

  9. I do not and my Dr. has never suggested I do either.  I am also still on the prenatal vitamins.
