Question:

Vitamins for vegetarians?

Is there any vitamins I need to take since I am a vegetarian? Also, is there a name for vegetarians(not vegans) who don't wear leather, fur, etc.? I heard it's the vegans who don't wear that stuff, but I'm a vegetarian and I don't wear that.

  1. You don't necessarily need vitamins but I'd recommend a multivitamin. Just watch out for gelatin in them. Most name brands like "One-A-Day" contain gelatin but usually health food stores will have some gelatin free options. If you can't find anything in stores, you can always order online. www.vegetarianvitamin.com is a good site with a wide selection of vitamins and everything is veg and gelatin free. I've ordered from them several times and had good experiences.

  2. You don't need any special supplements or vitamins.  Just eat a balanced diet, including as many fruits and veggies as meat-eaters should eat, and you'll be fine.

  3. What you should do is consult a DIETITIAN or NUTRITIONIST (not a regular doctor, doctors often have little to no nutritional education).  Tell them your daily routine (eating and exercise patterns, how much and what you eat, etc.).  Then ask them if they think you should take any supplements for protein, Vitamin B12, omega fatty acids, or any other nutrients found in meat or other animal products.  (I doubt that you will, though, since all of these nutrients can be gotten from plant foods, even Vitamin B12.)  (None of this is really necessary.  You can just take a supplement without consulting anyone, but you might want to, just in case something is urgently needed in your diet.)

No, there is no name for that kind of vegetarian.

  4. You sound like a vegetarian that doesn't wear fur.

    Am I right?

Anywho, you won't need any vitamins unless you go vegan...then you will need B12. Just eat balanced meals and you shall be fine.

  5. You would probably benefit from at least a simple multivitamin. Solgar makes a multivitamin formula that is suitable for vegetarians (no gelatin, rich with B vitamins that vegetarians often don't get). Veglife also has a vegan brand.

  6. The nutrients vegetarians are most likely to lack are the B vitamins (especially B12 because it is only from animal products), zinc, and iron.  You shouldn't need to take any supplements if you eat a well balanced diet because most of them have a plant source.  Many processed grain products such as cereals are fortified with these nutrients including vitamin B12.  If you are not a strict vegetarian and eat eggs, dairy products, and fish, you won't need to take any at all.  There has been some controversy about whether or not vitamin supplements are good for you so your best bet would be to not take the risk and just eat a well balanced diet.

  7. I don't wear leather nor fur nor suede nor sheepskin either, but I do wear wool in winter and sometimes even silk occasionally in summer. No special name for that.

I have been a vegetarian for 32 years and, apart from once or twice a few decades ago, I haven't taken vitamin and mineral supplements (even when I did, it was probably more a case of wanting to, after reading leaflets in health food shops, rather than actually needing to take them). I find I get all the vitamins and minerals and protein and carbohydrates and fats and fibre I need from the food I eat.

  8. You go to your health shop and you will have what you want

  9. if your a vegetarian make sure you eat a lot of protein. its very important, other than that GNC has a great multivitamin

  10. try naturessunshine.com  they have the best organic and well produced supplements.  the site will direct you

  11. Just eat a balanced diet and you wont need to take separate vitamins.

And you're a vegetarian... just leave it at that.

  12. If you are a lacto-ovo vegetarian and get your protein from other significant resources you don't. I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian. meaning I still eat eggs and dairy. I have been one for 1 year and I am healthier than ever without taking vitamins. My friend does take vitamins but I guess its how her body works. For me I don't for others they do.

I suggest asking your doctor for what the right thing for you to do is.

    :)
