Vitantonio Liuzzi not completely happy with grid penalty after 2011 Italian Grand Prix – Formula 1
Hispania Racing Team driver Vitantonio Liuzzi, who was imposed with a five-grid penalty at the 2011 Italian Grand Prix held this Sunday, September, 11 at Monza, has recently agreed to accept the imposition however with a clear hint of reluctance.
This penalty was imposed on Liuzzi by the Italian race stewards in response to the massive accident that took place at the Monza circuit in the first lap. An after-race analysis proved him guilty by the stewards and hence he was given the penalty. This penalty will be implemented at the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix.
Liuzzi called in trouble for himself when he slid onto grass and lost control of his F111 right when he entered the bottleneck of turn 1 during the Italian GP’s first lap. This resulted in a huge stack of cars that piled up and all the drivers that had to retire early included Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg, Renault’s Vitaly Petrov and himself.
Liuzzi defended his position by saying that Heikki Kovalainen of the Lotus team pushed him to the side and left him with no place to go and it was not his fault entirely.
In a post-race column for ESPNF1, the Italian driver stated, “Once I was on the grass I completely lost control of the car because we were nearing the braking zone and I couldn't slow down properly. Once the car was on the grass there was no stopping it and I ended up crashing into Petrov and Rosberg. I'm really sorry for them because they were just passengers in this sequence, but it wasn't my fault.”
Liuzzi, who is not so happy about what happened at the Italian Grand Prix, has finally accepted the decision of the race stewards although he believes that the accident was unavoidable and that he should not have been blamed for it.
He said, “They said that I caused the accident at the chicane, but this is not what happened out there. I'm not going to reject the stewards' decision, and at the end of the day it doesn't change much for us in Singapore.”
The next grand prix is going to take place in Singapore on Sunday, September 25, 2011 at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
