Vitor Belfort Twitter Post seems to confirm fight with Anderson Silva
Vitor Belfort, the former Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight champion posted the following on his Twitter page late Thursday night, “Hey guys looks like I will be fighting
on fev on superbowl week.”
This post seems to indicate that much talked about fight between Belfort and UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva is all but a given at this point.
Originally it appeared that Silva would fight Chael Sonnen in early 2011. However the rematch between the two was shelved after Sonnen failed a drug test and received a one-year suspension
from the California State Athletic Commission.
The CSAC report stated, “a sample from Sonnen’s August 6 drug test came back with a high testosterone to estrogen level, which is indicative of anabolic steroid use.”
Sonnen dominated Silva through the first four rounds of their August 7 title bout and it looked as if he was going to end Silva’s reign as middleweight champion. In the fifth and final
round Silva was able to catch Sonnen in a triangle choke, forcing him to tap out.
Days after the announcement of Sonnen’s positive drug test Belfort was pulled from the card of UFC 122, scheduled for November 13. Belfort had been scheduled to fight Yushin Okami. Nate
Marquardt was subsequently called in to compete in the headlining bout.
Shortly after Belfort was pulled from the Okami fight, UFC president Dana White confirmed via Twitter that Belfort would be Silva’s next opponent. White’s Twitter post read, “Vitor is
not injured. He is going to fight anderson for the title and the winner of marquart and okami are next.”
With the Twitter post from Belfort it seems as if the MMA world can look forward to a Silva vs. Belfort fight as the headlining bout of UFC 127 in Las Vegas.
Belfort will enter the fight with an MMA record of 19-8 while Silva will bring a 27-4 record to the Octagon. Silva will also look to extend his records for most consecutive UFC title defences
(seven) and most consecutive UFC victories (12).
