Vitor Belfort believes Chael Sonnen does not deserve a title shot – UFC News
Chael Sonnen is known for making enemies with his bitter tongue and his interference, even when it is not required. Old-school mixed martial artist Vitor Belfort, who will be locking horns with UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones at UFC 152, believes Sonnen
does not deserve a title shot just because he engages in trash-talking.
“We have the youngest fighter and one of the oldest guys and it is the old lion and the new lion. I have history in the UFC. Not like all the other clowns talking on twitter. You know which clown I'm talking about,” said Belfort FUEL TV's "UFC Tonight".
“I think he doesn't deserve a shot at all but I think the event should continue with another fighter. I don't know what happened, but I am thankful that the fight came to me. I am really thankful to Lorenzo and Dana for giving me the chance and to the fans.”
Belfort was humble and he did not try to impose the fact that he is the best fighter at the light heavyweight level who deserves a title shot, like Sonnen does. He humbly put forth the fact that he is better than Sonnen and that his portfolio shows it clearly.
Sonnen went head to head with middleweight champion Anderson Silva earlier this year, only to be knocked out in the second round. Unfortunately, ‘The American Gangster’ could not cement his legacy at the middleweight level. Therefore, Sonnen decided to move
up in weight and fight at the light heavyweight level, in pursuit of acquiring the title.
However, it was soon announced by President of the Ultimate Fighting Championship Dana White that Sonnen is not even in the top five contender list. According to White, if Sonnen wants a title shot at Jones, he will have to go through the contenders first.
For some reason, Sonnen is always the fighter in the lucky corner. Recently, when Dan Henderson was injured and backed out of his fight against Jon Jones at UFC 151, Dana White offered Sonnen a title shot at Jones. To Sonnen’s dismay, Jones rejected the
offer saying he will not change opponents just eight days prior to the show.
