Vitor Belfort talks about facing Jon Jones – UFC News
Vitor Belfort is one of the legendary fighters in the Ultimate Fighting Championship today. He is an old-school fighter with 21 wins and 9 losses in MMA, and 10 wins and 5 losses in UFC. He is currently scheduled to face light heavyweight champion Jon Jones
at UFC 152. Belfort is confident that his experience will be his main weapon against Jones.
“Here I am with 35 years old, 17 years into my career, fighting the best fighter of all-time, in the history of the UFC, a guy who's [considered] the best athlete in MMA,” asserted Belfort at Fuel TV’s UFC Tonight.
“He's the new breed. I have a lot of respect for the guy, but I'm ready to put up a fight and take the competition to a high level.”
“I'm so thankful for (UFC CEO) Lorenzo (Fertitta) and (UFC President) Dana (White) to trust me and to give me the opportunity. I'm really going to a division that I don't fight in anymore, but I have history. I think I have the right to go in there and fill
(in) as a replacement.”
According to Belfort, not many fighters of his generation are in the game yet. He added he is from the generation of Tank Abbott, Dan Severn, Mark Coleman and Royce Gracie. Furthermore, Belfort dubs this fight as the ‘old lion vs. the young lion’ showdown.
And, he insists everyone to watch it.
It should be noted here that Belfort was not the first to fight against Jones. Previously, president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship Dana White tried hooking up Shogun Rua for the show but it did not work out. Then, White insisted Lyoto Machida to
face Jones, but the latter declined the notion saying Machida was his lowest payout last year and so he is not into the rematch.
Lastly, White stumbled upon the idea of putting Vitor Belfort in the cage against Jones on September 22 at UFC 152. Belfort immediately agreed and so did Jones. As of now, the fight is on and hopefully the card will not enter a cancellation mode like UFC
151.
