Vitor Belfort thinks he is a better opponent for Jon Jones than Chael Sonnen – UFC News
Brazilian mixed martial artist Vitor Belfort believes he can put up a better fight against light heavyweight champion Jon Jones than Chael Sonnen. Belfort spoke regarding his title shot at Jones at UFC 152 on FUEL TV's "UFC Tonight”.
“It's not that I deserve it, but I have history in the UFC. I have been the champion of the light heavyweight division. It's not about Chael, it's just I think it is a better fight with me,” said Belfort while defending the idea of him fighting against Jones.
“I think John Jones vs. Belfort makes more sense. The way Chael got beat by Silva in the last fight, he doesn't deserve to go for a title fight. There were so many guys that were willing to fight Jon Jones that had good wins and good records in the UFC like
Chris Weidman,” he added.
Belfort believes he is more experienced and skilled than Sonnen in the cage. Sonnen went head to head with middleweight champion Anderson Silva earlier this year. While fans and UFC officials were expecting the American Gangster to end Silva’s reign as champion,
Sonnen lost the show via second round knockout.
The defeat marked Sonnen’s end at the middleweight level. Soon ‘The American Gangster’ announced he would move up in weight to face middleweight champion Jon Jones. However, Sonnen’s request was soon turned down by Dana White, president of the Ultimate Fighting
Championship.
According to White, if Sonnen wants to fight the champion, he will have to go through a line of opponents who are already set for the title shot. White further insisted that the light heavyweight division is way more competitive than the middleweight division
and so Sonnen should not expect any good news anytime soon.
As of now, Belfort is scheduled to face Jon Jones at UFC 152. Surprisingly, Sonnen is counting on Belfort to withdraw from the fight so he can get his chance. Only if Jones had accepted to fight Sonnen at the eleventh hour to save UFC 151, who knows maybe
‘The American Gangster’ would have defeated the all-time best fighter of UFC.
