Vivian Hoo - Woon Khe Wei clinch first title at the Indonesia Open Grand Prix Gold – Badminton news
World Number 60 ranked pair, Vivian Hoo and Woon Khe Wei of Malaysia clinched the Women’s Doubles title at the 2011 Indonesia Open Grand Prix Gold, on Sunday, October 2, in Indonesia. The win is a timely boost for the duo’s confidence to qualify for next
year’s London Olympics.
The Malaysian pair stunned World Number 48, Zhong Qianxin and Bao Yixin in the final match and claimed their first ever title in a Grand Prix Gold tournament. They delivered an impressive performance against the Chinese pair and proved their mettle by winning
the match in hard-fought three games.
In the opening set, the Chinese duo delivered a wonderful performance by playing positive while the Malaysians made a few mistakes and lost the first game by a margin of 19-21.
In the second game of this thrilling final, the Malaysians stunned the Chinese shuttlers by playing aggressive badminton. They maintained pressure on their opponents by dictating the pace and emerged as the winners of second set by the score of 21-19.
The final game of this interesting fight was absolutely thrilling as both pairs reached the concluding phase without taking any lead. However, the Malaysians were quicker this time as they finished-off the game with a difference of 21-18. The overall result
of final showdown was 19-21, 21-19 and 21-18.
After winning the match, Khe Wei said, “I’m really happy to win our first title as it is also the first time that we have beaten players from China. We have been training hard lately and part of our improvement as a pair is due to the fact that our defence
is getting better.”
She further added, “Hopefully, we’ll be able to maintain our performance and make a push for the London Olympics next year.”
The title at the Grand Prix Event is a big boost for the confidence of Vivian and Khe Wei to secure a place at the Olympic Games. However, the next assignment of Vivian and Khe Wei will be next month’s SEA Games, which are set to take place in Indonesia.
