Vivian Richards wants Darren Sammy to raise his game and lead by example
Former West Indian captain, Sir Vivian Richards, asked Darren Sammy to raise his game and lead the Caribbean team from the front in order to motivate his young men, who are struggling at the International level.
Sammy became captain of the West Indian side last year when senior players like Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo refused to sign the central contract with the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 Cricket Board (WICB).
Many of the former West Indian cricketers have criticized WICB for making Sammy the captain as he does not hold a permanent position in the side because of his skills as a player.
Richards, who is considered as one of the most destructive batsmen of the history of the game said that it is not Tennis or Golf where you can have a non-playing captain. Cricket is a team game and the captain has to lead by his own example like most of
the successful captains in the history of the sport.
He said, “We have to remember now that we’re not involved in Ryder Cup golf or the President’s Cup or http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Davis-c53314 Cup tennis where you have your non-playing captain. He should recognize the situation that he is in now with the responsibility of being captain,
knowing that a captain needs to perform to encourage the other individuals who are in your team.”
Legendary batsman added that he is still not convinced about the abilities of Otis Gibson as a coach because he has failed to produce good results for the West Indian team. However, Richards feels that a year or two are not enough to judge the skills of
an international coach and this is the reason why WICB should give some time to Gibson and give him a complete opportunity to prove his worth.
“I’m not sure whether Gibson is the right man (as coach). Every individual who comes into the job should be given an opportunity, a one year or two years in never really enough. Sometimes it takes two years to sort out the good from the bad and determine
where you would like to go,” Richards added.
