Aston Villa centre-half and new signing Ron Vlaar is delighted at having been handed over the club captaincy by manager Paul Lambert.
The captaincy was up for grabs after http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Stiliyan-Petrov-c34231 suspended his football career after being diagnosed with leukaemia. The Bulgarian international has since then been receiving treatment for his illness. Last month, it was found that the player’s illness
had gone into remission, but he was still far from returning to the pitch.
Meanwhile, striker Darren Bent had been handed over the captaincy by manager Paul Lambert, who saw the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 international fit enough to lead the team week in and week out.
However, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Darren-Bent-c10358 has not managed to score this season, despite having an impressive pre-season tour. The striker had missed the ending months of last season on account of a serious injury, and has spent much of his time recovering and working on his
fitness.

Vlaar had been a long term target for the club, and Lambert rated him highly. The manager had spent a great deal of time in trying to sign the Dutchman from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Feyenoord-c39258, but had experienced problems in agreeing a transfer free with the Dutch club.
However, the player eventually ended up securing a move to Villa Park, and has since put in a number of solid performances for the club. Vlaar was unable to suppress his delight at the captaincy, and said:
“Of course, being made Villa captain makes me very proud and I’m very happy with that. I think I know what to expect from myself and I want to do a good http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684.”
“The manager said before kick-off that I was captain on Saturday and that was a very positive signal from the manager to me."
“I don’t know exactly how it will go on but I don’t want to let him down and, hopefully, it will be important for the team."
