Question:

VoIP dsl alarm filter

I have recently gone to the Tmobile at home plan and spoke with Brinks (my alarm company) and they told me if they didn't receive a signal when I purposely set off the alarm that they would need to come out and install a special filter in the line at $50/hr. I would like to know if this is something that I can purchase and take care of myself? Also, can you tell me what type of filter I am looking for and how I would intall. Thanks.

  1. I could be wrong, but I think you can buy a DSL filter for a couple of bucks, and unlike POTS(plain old telephone signal) your VoIP is a bit unreliable for an alarm system if internet goes down so does the alarm(when this line goes down it looks like there is an intruder and the alarm company will call 911). Some phone companies will set up a regular POTS line for just an alarm, at a discounted rate, and this would avoid the problem of the alarm not getting signal to the Brinks company
