Volero ZÜRICH wins 2012 Swiss Volley Cup – Volleyball news
The women’s top volleyball teams of Switzerland, the Volero Zurich and Hotel Cristal VFM, met in the final match of 2012 Swiss Volley this past Monday.
The Wankdorfhalle in Bern hosted the important match. Volero Zurich demonstrated stellar performance and stamped 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-18) win over VFM squad. The action packed thriller was witnessed by some 3,100 fans in the city of Bern. Volero claimed
the trophy for seventh time in the history of Swiss National Cup.
The head coach, Svetlana Ilic, was more than happy to claim the top national honour. She put her emotions into words in the following manner. She said, “The national cup is extremely important here in Switzerland, much more than in other countries like in
Serbia where I actually stem from. I am also happy that the players stayed cool and played well the deciding rallies.”
The VFM ladies started out well in the game and played bravely. They formed good combinations and were not too intimidated by the strong opponent in the first set. Zurich had problems with the execution of the first attack, which enabled VFM to take lead.
However, Zurich players settled down in their positions and then the sports hall saw an exchange of long rallies and mighty attacks. With the help of good attack tactics and solid defence, Zurich managed to break the rhythm of VFM. After the second technical
timeout, Zurich played fast and left VFM behind. The opening set came to an end with the final scores of 25-18, while Zurich claimed better status.
The success in the opening set gave Zurich more confidence and energy to take a good start in the following frame. They carried the momentum and promptly went up on the scorecard. The former champions of the Swiss National Cup showed series of terrific attacks
and dragged VFM under pressure. They played efficiently and did not allow VFM to come up. VFM struggled to come out of the blues but face strong resistance from the opposite side.
Meanwhile, Zurich added quick points and extended its lead to 2-0. They closed the second set with final score of 26-24.
Volero controlled the operations of the game in third set as well. They remained consistent and avoided any slip-ups. As a result, they managed to touch the finish line in 77th minute of the game. Third set ended at 25-18 and Volero emerged as successful
team of the final showdown of Swiss Volley.
Earlier on, Volero Zurich also competed at this year’s 1/8 finals of the CEV Volleyball Champions League. They lost to Azerbaijan’s Azerrail Baku and could not advance to the semi-final stage. The team could not prove its endeavours at the Champions League
but celebrated the domestic victory after claiming the Swiss National Cup.
