Question:

Volkswagen Air Cleaners: How To

My 1970 Volkswagen has been driven on dusty roads for the past several years (prior to me buying it.) Now, before I go a long distance I think the filter should likely be replaced. The Volkswagen owner's manual talks a lot about oil washing out the lower and upper elements of the cleaner, and if this is the case something is wrong with my V-dub. There only appears to be a simple cylinder, with no oil going in or out. Can anyone help me, or are the air filters and cleaners two separate components?

  1. If you have one of the old sponge air filters, you have oil the filter after you have cleaned it. To do this, put some oil on the filter and then squeeze it so all of the excess oil comes out. It would be a good idea if the car could do this itself, but there are no oil tubes going either into or out of the filter assembly, so you have to oil it yourself.

The reason you do this is so that dust particles stick to the oil in the filter rather then getting sucked into the engine.

  2. ive dealt with a few vehicles that had oil bath filters no oil is pumped up to the filter you remove the filter clean or replace the element and add a little oil the oil will trap the dirt
