Volkswagen superbeetle engine

Question

I'm looking for a ballpark figure on replacing or rebuilding the engine of a 1973 volkswagen superbeetle. At the moment, the engine is frozen and I am not a mechanic and don't know what to do about it. Any advice, input or anything else would be much appreciated.

Mark's right! Do your research before you go any further. Decide what it is you want out fo the engine: fuel economy and dependability? You want to stay as close to stock as possible with a few improvements. Keep it at 1600 CC's

Add a full-flow oil system with a filter, and perhaps hydraulic lifters so as to just adjust the valves once and no more.

Want more power? Mildly ported and polished heads will gain you operating efficiency and a bit more power. Add a mild cam, extractor exhaust, a properly jetted carb and a PerLux Ignitor electronic ignition module to top it off and you'll have yourself a good, dependable runner that won't have to be fussed over and that will get decent gas mileage. Just remember to keep your foot out of it!

There are about a million places that sell rebuilt or even brand new VW air cooled engines in just about any configuration you want.  A quick Google search should reveal dozens of option or a trip to the local Barnes & Noble will provide you with several magazines dedicated solely to air-cooled VW's.
