1. Hi -

Don't be nervous. At the school I help coach at, tryouts are pretty laid back. Generally we start with some warming up and then do drills. The drills will focus on different skills (passing, setting, hitting, serving). This will give the coach a good idea of where you are at. The drills will be repetative, so they may have two people partnered up. One throws the ball to the other and the other passes it back. After 5 minutes they switch. For serving, everyone divides up into 2 sides and serves at each other - balls flying everywhere - the coach then watches the form and results of individuals. For hitting, it is usually a line. You get a turn then go to the back of the line.

Then there may also be some playing - maybe not 6 on 6, but smaller groups, so we can see how you interact with the other players.

To prepare, I would do a little research on the rules so you have an idea of what you are doing. Also, how much you've played and what your skills are will make a difference - the more practice beforehand the better. But having solid fundamentals is important - so make sure you practice with people who know how to play. There is a saying - "you can't teach height" - so the taller you are the bigger your advantage will be.

At the freshman level, the coach is looking for potential - someone who can learn and become good. Being in good shape, listening to the coach, and having a good attitude will go along way.

    Good luck.

  2. I have been playing volleyball for only 7 seasons, and 3 of them have been on club. The key to making the team for a good coach is knowing the fundamentals [serving, passing, & hitting (in that order)] and playing hard the entire time.

  3. just try out!

when i tried out for a REALLy good club this year,

i was So dissapointed cause i didnt make it on a good team.

but when i tried out at another club later on that month,

i got on the travel team!

    it was AWESOME!

    my tips...

just practice a LOT on passing

there are a lot of positions

or you can try REALLy hard on setting!

for passing, u would be a liberel(i dont know if i spelled that right).

for setting, u could be a setter.

and for hitting(spiking), u could be a hitter(outside or middle or opposite)

i tried REALLY hard and practiced on my own a lot during the middle of both tryouts

    if u work hard,

u could always achieve your goals!

    look where it got me!

    but dont forget,

dont just try hard on only ONE position!

    u always have opportunities!

    work hard on all positions!

  4. just keep practicing bumping and setting to yourself, it'll only make you better!

    don't give upp!

    good luck! =)

  5. Well my girl, the worst thing you can do is get nervous. The best thing you can do is show good attitude and hustle. If you do the best that you can do, that is really all that matters. I know that sounds cliche, but it is true. If you do not make it, do not give up. When i didn't make my school team in 7th grade, i tried out for a traveling team, where my odds were way less likely (they were keeping 12 out of like 60 and traveling team players are way harder to beat out at try outs) but i made it... i found out later that i didn't make my school team for dumb reasons. Do not get discouraged, and keep playing volleyball no matter what.

  6. set,bump,spike

    work on all of them

also try making an over hand serve

    it'll make u look better

  7. Dont be nervous. One thing that I have learned from trying out for select volleyball is to wear a very bright colored shirt so that you will be noticed by the judges or coaches and you will stand out and direct their attention to you.

Here are some more tips that I have learned

-Do anything to your presentation to stand out (such as ribbons in your hair, bright shirts, etc.)

-Make sure that you pay attention to all of the directions and drills.

-Remember that they are not looking for the best players they are looking for the people that they can train and turn into the best players.

-Remember that you are very nice and have a good attitude so that they dont get the wrong impression.

    -A smile will always help.

-Dont get discouraged and keep trying.

    I hope I helped!

    Good luck!

  8. Well, you mentioned bumping, setting, but how about your hitting?

To be on a team you'd better start practicing overhand serve. If you have problem sending the ball over the net, try starting at the 10-ft line and move yourself back 5 feet after each ten good serves. Your goal it to serve at least 5 out of 10 over at the beginning, before you raise the bar to 8 out of 10 for tryout. My boy is in 6th grade but just got into 7th graders' team because of his consistent serving (his best was 19 out of 20).

You need to practice jump hit with 3-step approach. If you want to know more about volleyball, try http://volleyball.about.com and see which part would be more interesting to you.

You'd better start running about half to one mile everyday. When there are 50 girls competing for 15 spots, the easiest way to filter out some of them is to put them on the track.

It is recommended to find an open volleyball gym and play with some "nice" people who can offer you some game time instruction. Be careful that you don't want to get hurt. If you don't feel comfortable playing open volleyball, stay with your buddies and play safe.

At tryout, the coach would be looking at your spirit, foot movement (move your feet before every pass), whether you will loudly call out ("mine", "I go", "short", "out"), whether you have all fundamentals, and whether you are coachable. Keep yourself moving, running after each "loose ball" would get enough attention. Don't worry too much if you should have a few bad pass or serve, just keep your head up and do your best.

And most important part... listen to the coach very carefully and follow his/her instruction.
