Volleyball - 2010 FIVB Chennai Challenger: Brazil and Germany reach quarterfinals
The 2010 FIVB Chennai Challenger Tournament is in full swing these days and the Indian city of Chennai is currently staging some exciting beach volleyball fights. The event started on 27th September, 2010 with Country Quota matches which were
then followed by the Qualifiers, where successful pairs were promoted to the Main Draw stage.
The women teams of Brazil and Germany clawed their way to the quarter finals by conquering their opponents during the main draw fixtures.
Brazil vs. Germany
Fabiane Boogaerdt Aires (Fabi) and Julia Schmidt Beatriz (Juli) of Brazil took on the German contenders, Frederike Fischer and Claudia Lehmann on Wednesday.
The match had a completely different tone in the first set. The German pair appeared to be in the commanding position and they turned the game in their favor. Brazil produced some long serves that crossed the end line and provided the other team with a perfect
chance to launch their authority. Germans built a lead by quick attack and strong defense while the Brazilian pair struggled in the game. It couldn’t avoid loss in the first set. Germany enjoyed the first-set victory by 21-15.
The players traded their places in the second set which proved fruitful for the Brazilian duo. They overcame their weaknesses and got a hold on the game. Fabi/Juli served well and attacked the defense line of Germany. They remained consistent in their approach
and gradually stretched the score to the finish line. Germany failed in the chase and lost the second set with a margin of 9 points. The set ended with 21-15.
The second set victory set the direction for Brazil and they kept on moving with the same pace. The third set saw some powerful shots from both the sides. Somehow, Brazilian players firmly stood their ground and didn’t give their opponents a chance to return
in the game. They won the set by posting 15-10 and declared match victory, also confirming their participation in the quarter final.
After the match, Fabi said, “We played well and are happy for having scored this win in three sets. The Germans are tough for us always, including in Under-21 and university tournaments. It was great to have a lot of people cheering us and this gives us
confidence to do better in the coming matches. All teams come here with the intention of winning the title and hopefully we should be able to go all the way to the podium.”
Germany vs. Belgium
Karla Borger and Britta Buthe of Germany defeated Belgium’s Liesbeth Mouha and Goedele Van Cauteren in the other main draw match on the same day. With this win, the German pair successfully reserved its berth in the quarterfinal of Chennai Challenger.
Germany looked in control right from the beginning. They had the advantage of good physique and tall stature. So, they put pressure on the other side and kept an upper hand. Belgium tried to defend but couldn’t stand the cruising spikes of German pair. Germany
picked up lead in the first set and maintained the gap until the end. The set ended in Germany’s favor at 21-11.
Belgium reacted in the second set and demonstrated some good efforts to catch up with Germany’s score. They avoided ball reception errors and brought perfection to their serves, in the end claiming win with 22-20.
Consequently, Germany came up with a different plan and regained their leading role in the game. Belgium threw everything in attack but Germany refused to take any pressure. Germany captured the golden set by achieving 15-12. They celebrated the main draw
victory and clinched a slot in the quarter final.
