Volleyball Club World Championships (FIVB) Doha 2010 has officially started
The Volleyball Club World Championships (FIVB) Doha 2010 started today. The event has been brought to life after seventeen years and there is much excitement and enthusiasm in the international arena regarding this championship. The event includes teams
of both the genders, with eight male and six female teams participating, making it the first time for the female teams to enter the competition. The championship is taking place at Al-Gharafa Sports Club and will go on till the 21st of December.
Qatar Volleyball Association had been making the preparations with great zeal and has taken all the necessary steps to come up to the international standards. Qatar wants to be seen as a country which promotes and encourages sport. In order to boost this
image, it plans to host as many international sports events as it can. Qatar has already gotten the privilege to host the FIFA World Cup 2022 and it is also playing host to the upcoming Asian Football Cup. It also plans to bid for the Volleyball World Championship.
The coaches of the participating teams are all excited to be a part of this event. Head coach of the Dominican Republic’s Women’s Club Mirador, Marcos Kwiek said: “It is a real honor to be here and compete at the Club World Championships after 16 years have
passed since the last edition. We’ll do our best to represent our Confederation here.”
Coach Gary Sato of USA expressed his sentiments in the following words: “We are extremely pleased to be here, my team is young but nevertheless we’ll be giving our best on court.”
The first match of the tournament was scheduled to take place between America’s Paul Mitchell and Argentinean Brean Bolivar. The home team, Al-Arabi was listed to display its skill next by competing against Al Alhi of Saudi Arab.
After an inspection of the stadium by the FIVB officials yesterday, Mr. Khalid Ali Al-Mawlawi greeted them in the following words: “I would like to state that FIVB officials and local organizers are here to join their respective forces together, in a real
spirit of friendship and mutual cooperation, in order to turn this Championship into a very successful and exciting event".
Apart from coming up to the standards defined by the FIVB committee, significant efforts have been made to make this event a success and a memorable one in the history of international volleyball. All the teams have been well catered for and excellent arrangements
for their accommodations were in place before their arrival.
There is an attractive amount of prize money for the winners of both the male and female tournaments. The male team will take home a grand total of US$1.3 million whereas the winner from the female teams will get an amount of US$550,000.
For the local fans, this week has great thrill and excitement in store for them as they will get the chance to watch the heat of the competition live in the stadium. Other than that, FIVB will be regularly posting updates about the tournament at their official
