Gabriela Perez del Solar - PERU
The outstanding volleyball star of the yesteryears, Gabriela Perez del Solar is also one of the potential contenders, who will be inducted in the Volleyball Hall of Fame at the 25th Enshrining Ceremony on Friday, 22nd October, 2010. She was the indoor volleyball
player from Peru. She hit the international scene at very young age and turned many heads around by a solid performance. The star player from Peru served for her country since the start of her career. Perez del Solar played a vital role in Peru’s fourth position
finish at 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
The Peruvian ladies once again outshined and qualified for the 1988 Olympic Games. It was another test of blocking-skills for Perez del Solar; she proved her effort and led the team to silver medal victory. The 1988 Olympic Games were held in Seoul, South
Korea. The multi-talented Perez built a reputation as the best receiver and middle blocker. Other than Olympic achievements, Perez was nominated as the best blocker at FIVB World Championship for more than one time. She defended her team’s position by incredible
defence in 1986, 1988, and 1991 and got recognition as the best blocker. Peru’s National Women’s Volleyball Team settled for third-place at 1988 FIVB World Championship.
Perez del Solar was also attached with the Peruvian team in five South American Championships and shared the delight of holding four gold-medals.
Aleksandr Savin - Russia
Aleksandr Savin from Russia will also join the Hall of Fame group. The Great Russian indoor volleyball player took the Russian volleyball game to a new level. The era of 70s and 80 was heavily influenced by the Soviet Union Teams and Alaksandr Savin was
considered among the key players of Russian “army”. Russia clinched a spot in the gold-medal match at 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, while Savin supported his team by putting mind, body and soul in the game. By hook or by crook, Russia couldn’t overcome Poland
and lost the final battle but Savin’s individual endeavour was openly acknowledged.
The Russia studs kept their gold-medal hope alive and paved their way to final victory at the 1980 Olympic Games. Russia displayed great effort in the four-set gold-medal match and snatched victory from Bulgaria. Aleksandr showed-off his hitting capabilities
and good tactics. Similarly, Savin led the team to gold medal victory at the FIVB World Championship in 1977 and 1978. He shared a great bond with his team and enabled the team to go for gold-medal victory in 1981 FIVB World Championship once again. Savin
will be inducted in the Hall of Fame along with other legends of his era in the upcoming Enshrining ceremony on Friday.
