Volleyball Help..?

Eh ok..well my family doesn't have an unbelievable amount of money, so I can't do club volleyball until next year. I'm in 8th grade....so my mom made me join YMCA(eww). Yeah well I had practice today, and my team isn't exactly the best. From judging every person based on skills, I would say that only me and 2 other girls have actually played before. The others are just...well not so good. I'm not mad at them because of that, but it's because they don't TRY at all. I mean the coach throws the ball into the court in backrow, and the girl is just standing there dozing off into space. I tried to be nice and have a good attitude, and I yelled encouragingly, "Come on ladies let's hustle! :)" and I really tried to keep a positive attitude but UGH. Even the coach has no experience from what I can't tell and she doesn't say anything! There's this one girl who's played before at least, and her mom really knows the game. She completely agreed that the team wasn't very good.

  1. well instead of just encoraging them, why dont you try helping them get better! like practicing after hours with them, or telling them what their doing wrong. that way they'll get better, you'll feel better, and the chances of you winning are better!

    hope this helps!

  2. well......... hmmm....

i was a varsity last yr in h.s...although i'm new in volleyball but i still manage to improve my skills until I become good at it... then dis yr in college, I wasn't able to play v.ball because my mom doesn't want me to... i played in the university games and find it hard to play if your the only one who carries the game, in your case your still lucky because there were 3 of you..  actually i was forbidden to play because i'm gonna take part on the big event which is the mr. and ms. university.. instead of practising with my competitors, i sneak out to play.. on the final day, we  have our last game for the 3rd place in the morning and the coronation night of the pageant...only 5 sets and 3 sets to win.. but after wining the 2 sets in row, my team8s  leave it all to me and i was exhausted under the sun.. i almost cried.. but they come to realize, finaly, that i am doing everything to win.. instead of getting my beauty sleep i am playing against the heat of the sun..i told them that this is our last chance.. either we win a place of just simply waste it... and..whew... tnk goodness I wasn't the only one moving around the court, i have them to help me out quite a bit.. and for that we won the 3rd place... but back when I was a varsity we're always the champion wherever we compete.. we even represent our region... winning the 3rd place is sad... but it's better than nothing...  be patient with your team8s.. after all it's a teamwork kind of game.... share them all you know...

i love volleyball... it's the only thing that i've intrested in, but now i can't play anymore ='(...

  3. What you really need is the touches on the ball.  YMCA volleyball will provide that for you.  Just because it is not the level you would like does not mean that you will get the benefits.

You say that there is a good coach out there.  Talk with that coach and see if that coach will work with you if you show up early or stay late.  I used to coach at a YMCA here in Houston.  There was one player that was by far better than everyone else.  She was the first one in the building and was still practicing her serve when the lights cut out as her parents and I watched.  She got better and better because of her attitude and the amount of touches on the ball that she got every practice.  She did not let the level of play bother her.  She spent 2 years in the YMCA and then went on to junior high and club the following year.  She has now graduated from a top NAIA school and went to the nationals 4 straight years while she was there.

You can do the same thing.  You not need to win in order to get better.  You need to get the touches on the ball, not wins.  Make every minute on the court count toward getting you better.  Do not let your team get you frustrated or get you down.  Work on your game and concentrate on YOU getting better.  If you have any players on the team, they will want to copy your good example.

  4. Just help the people on your team, especially the ones who need the help, that they should practice at home every day. Dont tell them they're bad straight forward. It will hurt them, but say in fewer words where they'll get the hint, but know your only being truthful. I've had people on my team in volleyball that weren't so good either. But my mom was the coach, so I told my mom to have the assistant coach take the players who need help, off to the side, and help them one on one. Practice makes Perfect. Just remember that.

  5. i love volleyball it is my favorite sport....just don't give up on them just yet i played for highlands volleyball club once and as long as your on a team and your trying it is ok. And maybe by doing this it will help you to learn more skills because you have to do twice as many if the other people don't even try....who know's it might make you stronger if you just keep up with it!

  6. help the ones on your team who are struggling, and member scouts always look at YMCA

  7. i had the same situation.well not YMCA but my group in tryouts for school. im pretty much the same age as you and i know being on a team with not as good as you exspesually in tryouts for highschool volleyball and when you are one of the best starting 6 its not great. but i found out that if you incourage them they will try a little bit but there is a girl on my team right now and she is the coaches daughter which kinda sucks. but i love her hahah she is really nice but she really knows how to take charge. if you do something she will act like shes the coach and say ok i need you to do this or try this. but the fact is it really makes me mad and i want to just beat her so i try alot and i mean ALOTTT! harder. just have a positive attitude and be a leader. it has always worked!. who knows maybe by the end of the season everyone will be close to your level! :)

  8. I am not familiar with the situation in the US...

However I have played lots of social volleyball in which there are a few good players and the others are just learning..

That the only difference is the amount of volleyball time each person has.  The only way to improve the beginners is to give them a lot more practice and experience - and let's face it, there is big learning curve to volleyball.  If they are shown the basics straight away and get a lot of practice at that, then their skills can improve.

Beginners have a difficult time judging where the ball is going to land, and who is best to receive it? First though are the ball handling skills they lack - and they need a lot of practice and individual attention, to get that right.

The only solution I see, is to purchase a cheap practice volleyball, and then have a lot of practice time together to up their skills.  And so they have to be keen to put in the practice time in - to improve - or else they'll most likely like to drop volleyball altogether because of the lack of progress, etc.

If you know that a person's attitude is keen and they are willing to learn, then you feed them the information little by little so that they can adjust themselves and improve.

You show them how to set - and then how to spike - and it can be as simple as that.  When they mess up - explain what was the fault, so that they can adjust next time.

If you have so little practice time - then you are not going to be ready for the serious games.

  9. I only have two suggestions:

    1> Listen to Gordon;

    2> Quit YMCA

It sounds to me that you should have been to some open gyms playing volleyball instead of going to YMCA, but I am not sure whether your city has any open gym or not. Try this link and see whether you can find anything that is a little more helpful.

    http://volleyball.org/usa/index.html

click on your state, city if possible to find an open gym. I know we have two huge lists in California.
