Volleyball News: Brazil whiplashes USA at the FIVB Women’s World Championship 2010
The second round of the FIVB Women’s World Championship completed its run on Wednesday, 10th November and staged the final three matches in Pool E and Pool F. In one of the encounters, USA clashed with Brazil and played a 4-set match. The American
team lost the battle to resilient rival Brazil. The loss of match at the crucial stage of tournament clearly signals that USA has lost focus on the final prize of FIVB Women’s World Championship. Brazil outplayed American squad and earned triumph by posting
3-1 (25-19, 24-26, 25-19, and 25-23).

Americans in four-set thriller. Brazil finished the second round with a score of 7-0 and remained unbeaten in the championship.
First Set
Brazil opened the match with strong serves by Sheilla Castro. Natalia Pereira took her position and floated the ball over the net. The wonderful spikes and line-shots landed in American half and Brazil earned the early points of game. The U.S. players resisted
to Brazilian score and poised their feet on the court. Heather Bown and Foluke Akinradewo formed a good combination and received huge applause for excellent blocking. In the meantime, Logan Tom started off with the hard-hitting and added quick points in USA’s
score. They picked up a lead of 16-15 at the second technical timeout. However, Brazil hit back and attacked with players like Jaqueline. The score shifted with a narrow gap and tied at 17-17. Brazil remained on the same course and added three points in a
row. The U.S. team tried hard but they could only help a score of 19, while Brazil hit the finish line, securing first set of the game.
Second Set
The fired-up U.S. team reacted violently in second set and threw everything in attack. They were able to build a lead of 9-5 with the help of a good defence strategy. Brazil also responded in the same fashion. The top force of Brazilian team, Jaqueline produced
powerful shots and tied the game at 10-10. The second set of the match was a point-to-point battle and long rallies were seen. Both sides frequently traded the lead and game was tied at several points. The severe dead-lock came 21-21 but Brazil managed to
break the tie by adding two points. However, USA denied Brazilian power and took the score to 24-23. But lo and behold! Game was once again tied at 24-24, thanks to miscue of the American players. Nonetheless, Akinradewo of USA put an end to the suspense and
closed the set at 26-24.
Third and Fourth Set
Brazil picked up 8-6 lead in third set but U.S. hitters geared up and hit 16-9 on the scoreboard in the next few moments. Brazil returned in the game and dismantled American power to post 25-19 victory. The U.S. team put a great effort in fourth set but
couldn’t avoid the chances of defeat. Brazil posted 25-23 victory over American team.
In the top-scorer category, Destinee Hooker of USA settled for top position by scoring 20 points, while her teammate Jordan Larson and Logan Tom registered 15 and 10 points respectively. On the other hand, Jaqueline of Brazil contributed 18 valuable points
via ground-breaking spikes. Natalia and Sheila polled 15 points each, while Thaisa Menezes helped 14 points in team’s score.
