The 2010 Volleyball season was a tremendous success for the Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB). The year can be considered as a milestone for FIVB development as it encompassed various, challenging FIVB events. The expansion of the sport was the
top priority of FIVB in 2010 season and they invested huge amounts in this regard. FIVB put a new life in the National Federations with enormous monetary and emotional support.
FIVB made a historic move and invested around $ 4m to help the growth of national federations in 2010 season. This provided the local volleyball federations with a platform so that they can grow. FIVB also launched a special development fund in collaboration
with the IOC’s Olympic Solidarity Program, which help in providing financial backing to the volleyball event organizers.
In the last season, an additional Olympics qualifying process was initiated for the Beach Volleyball competitions at the 2012 London Olympics. The Beach Volleyball Continental Cup was officially launched, which created more opportunities for players to qualify
for the 2012 London Olympics. The concept of Beach Volleyball Continental Cup was introduced in 153 countries all around the world. It was a great achievement and an evident sign of development.
The Muscat Beach Volleyball Asian Beach Games was another remarkable effort by FIVB, giving fame to the sport. A total of 54 men’s and women’s duos participated in the tournament and made it a great success. On the whole, the sports of indoor volleyball
and beach volleyball flourished throughout the world, while FIVB played an instrumental role in its growth.
The Vice President and FIVB Development Commission President, Vicente Araujo commented: “The FIVB development programme in 2010 has been incredibly successful in terms of providing more growth in the sport of Beach Volleyball and Volleyball around the world.
There has been more investment both financially and with resources so 2010 has the potential to be the year when FIVB Development turned a corner and set the trend for outstanding development achievement.”
Likewise, the Steering committee President, FIVB Treasurer and Executive Vice President Andre Meyer had his say about the developments in 2010 season. He stated: “We are proud to be able to make available to Confederations and Federations such a sum for
development. This indicates the reach of the FIVB Development program and the investment the FIVB is putting into Volleyball and Beach Volleyball to ensure it is more accessible for more people.”
