Volleyball Serve...?

hi.. okay this might be a pretty long question ...

i am going into grade 11 next year, and this year i only got to play for about a month, because i hurt my knee. so, obviously i want to come back next year much stronger! anyways, the month that i played, i really struggled with my serves.. sometimes they went in, sometimes they went wayy out, and sometimes they hit the net!! it was really uncontrolled and random. so i was hoping somebody had some drills for me to do to nail my overhand serve. i have the power-- that's definately not the issue. i just need to control them, and have a reliable serve!

  1. OK most important thing is to practice a lot, but on the serve it all depends on if you want it to be floater or a topspin. Floater- is were you do not snap you wrist at all, it still has some heat on it but it does not spin in the air. A topspin- is where you flick your wrist and it spins in the the air and has a lot of heat too. Anyways either way so tips you could use to get you serve over and in would be to have you shoulder pointed in the direction that you want the ball to go, because where you shoulder is pointed that is where it is going to go. You need to focus on your serving position in order to have a good serve; if you have a good serving posture then it will be a good serve. Anyways I hope I was of help even thought it is really hard to explain this to you on here. The best thing I can tell you to do is ask you coach what you should do. They will be able to explain it to you better. Good luck and have fun!!


  2. You can just practice. Make sure that you extend your arm fully and hit the ball. Don't swing across your body go downwards. And also make sure you step back if you need to if you have to much power that will make it go over the bounds line.

  3. Practice, practice, practice.  Either find an inside wall and put a tape line at regulation height and stand 30' feet away

    and just keep working on consistently hitting it within 1-3 ft.

    over the line... or find a partner(or partners) and hit balls

    across a net again and again.

  4. You may not be using proper arm-swing when serving.

    If you use proper arm-swing technique, you will have good control.

    Below are few tips:

    1.  Draw your hitting arm back with the elbow bent about 90 degrees above and behind your shoulder.  Palm should be facing away from your head.

    2.  Swing in your elbow toward where you want to hit, snap your elbow fully extending your arm, and then snap your wrist when making contact with the ball.  And follow through.

    ***If you're serving floaters, avoid wrist snap and follow-thru.  Instead, you should freeze as make the contact***



    The key is to have your elbow point where you're hitting to before extending your arm toward the ball.  This is called 'elbow snapping technique' which should give you better control than using shoulder swing, which not only gives you poor control of the ball but can also cause shoulder injury.

  5. you should face your should where you want the ball to go you give it you all and work on havin the most powerful serve.

    picture sum1 that you dont like as the ball and hit it hard as you kan.

  6. practice!

    put the ball on your left hand if your are right handed(donimate). then your dominate hand on top, put the ball to a 45 degree angle, try to have your dominate hand  there after.so when your hitting your hand should be somewhere up there.put dominate hand behind head so elbow pionts to your side, left hand has ball, throw ball up,try to hit "the" spot where you had the ball before. don't just swing and stop , follow through by keep swinging after you hit the ball like softball players throwing ball. Thats kind of how my coach tells me. Good Luck Hope It Helps
