  1. 1- a quick- 2 in above the net

2- middle- set it straight up

3- slide- set behind you slightly so the middle can slide over and hit it, basically a fake out

4- outside hitter- above the net

5- for the right side- set behide you

10- middle back- set to the 10 foot line

  2. You'll find that different coaches call different hits by different numbers or letters (or words in some instances).  Your basics I'd say are 1, 2, 4, 5, C, B or R (backrow).  There are several explanations already here of what these mean.

Your coach will be glad to tell you which he or she uses.

  3. 1.- quick middle- about two inches above the net

2.- middle- about a foot above the net

3.- in between a middle and an outside (2 and 5) - about two feet above the net so the hitter is able to get there

4-. ball set off the net for a hitter that was standing on the ten foot line

5 -an outside- about a foot above the net

8- quick back set - few inches above the net

9- regular back set- about a foot or two above the net

slide- an approach where one takes off with one foot: similar to a lay up in basketball

cross- the two hitters cross each others' path

shoot ball- a fast set to the outside- two inches above the  net

Keep in mind that these sets are based on how good your hitters and your setter are. Maybe they have to be higher for your hitters, or maybe your setter can't set that low or sets too high.

    Hope this helped!

  4. Well...its a mainstream kinda thing. Most people use the numbers as the set that they want or the setter tells the hitter what their gonna get.

Our numbers maybe different from some but usually these are pretty standard plays...been doing it for 17 yrs.

    1. Quick middle

    2. Float middle

    3. Shoot outside quick (gun shape with hand or 3 fingers)

    4. Outside slot between blockers

    5. Outside high to the antennae

Crossed fingers - tandem hit to second hitter

Pipe (flat hand up and down on chest finger pointing to chin)  back row middle

Just a few that we use....
