  1. What I look for in a Captain is someone who's level-headed, capable of leading, and a "take control" kind of personality. Most importantly, I look for someone that I wish others would emulate. As a captain, you are setting the standard for future captains because others are watching the current one.

One bad captain choice can possibly get a coach fired in a few seasons. What I mean is:

    1. A coach picks a captain.

    2. That captain yells at referees, puts down his teammates, berates the coach publicly, and shows up late for practices.

    3. The following year, the coach picks someone who he thinks is a better choice. Since last year's captain got away with it, this years captain acts the same, but worse.

    5. Repeat #3.

    6. Coach is fired because no one wants to play anymore, the volleyball team gets sanctioned by the state association for rude behavior during games and inappropriate conduct at visiting team's gyms.

By the way, through this whole scenario, it is assumed that the coach just does not have the respect of his players due to his first mistake of choosing the incorrect captain.

    Your duties as captain:

    - Organize summer play when the coach cannot due to contact rules.

    - Lead the team during warm-ups. Some coaches like to take a backseat and see who does this on their own. Often letting players sit around. If you notice this, take the initiative and start warming up everyone. If you don't, the coach will and he'll be left wondering who will step up as a captain this year.

    - Communicate the team's gripes in a tactful way. If an official wants to talk with you, you must be able to communicate what your team wants quickly, but in a respectful and understanding way.

    - Be a sounding board. Sometimes you will see things as a player that a coach will not see or hear: Mumbling, griping, two teammates fighting over a girl/boy, etc. As a captain, it is your duty to fix these situations and if you can't, let the coach know. Your primary duty is to keep the team together and working toward a common goal. You and your coach work together to make this happen.

There may be other duties that your coach wants a captain to perform specifically, but the root is always the same.

Leadership is doing the hard work. What I mean is that you cannot coast through the season. As a captain, you must work hard and keep the team together.

  2. former volleyball captain here. =] from my experience coaches look for a person the team looks to for motivation, information, leadership, advice. all that good stuff. so its good to know details about games, practice times, etc. it helps a whole bunch to be loud on the court, never ever ever ever ever show attitude toward your teammates or the coaches. especially teammates cause if they dont like you, they wont hesitate to talk to the coach about replacing you. so be super outgoing, super nice, and impress the coaches and you got it in the bag. =]

  3. they look for someone who can lead the team but also hold up their own responsiblities. you have to go up when the referee calls you and meet the other teams captain(s) and do the toss for who serves first. as far as on the court you are speaking captain for your team so you are the on who can talk to the referee for your coach about a play.  you also have to keep your team working together and don't let them get down. as a captain you are looke up to so you will have to be good enough to show it in your actions and also will probably have to lead the team in drills and stretching.
