  1. Work on something that you like. My specialty was that i was a consistent server. I have the unhittable underhand serve. The coach always put my first in serving and was named captain of my 8th grade team. That is what most coaches look for; consistency. Just learn a technique that you like (serving, passing, spiking-it can be done, or blocking- doesn't mean at the net, but returning the ball every tim) of volleyball and be the best of it from everyone else; one good place is serving.

  2. Coaches will look at all the skills.  Coaches will also look at hustle and attitude.  Hustle the entire time you are at practice and never say anything negative while you are at practice.  If your coach corrects something on one of your skills, your answer should be "thank you, I will work on that" and mean it.  Call every ball LOUDLY.

If you have a friend and a volleyball, you should try to practice together.  Practice your passing together.  You can also spread out and work on your serving.  You want to be over 40 feet apart since the net is 30 feet from the serving line.  If you only get 30 feet apart, you will try to serve the ball to your friend and you will be practicing serving into the net.  You can also practice your overhand passing or setting.

While you are alone, you can work on your spike approach.  Do your approach, land, get back to your starting position as quickly as you can and then do your approach again.  Do 10 approaches and take a 1 minute break.  Do 10. And so on.  Do at least 100 per day.  Do more if you can.

If you have the volleyball, practice your toss for your overhand serve.  Do 10, take 1 minute break, do 10 and so on for at least 100 tosses.  Do more if you can.

The key to getting ready for a tryout is just spending as much time as you can doing volleyball skills.  Starting in October is a great idea.  That will give you 2 full months to get ready.  Years ago when I was in high school, I ran cross country to get in shape for basketball.  I did not work on my basketball skills.  I was in great shape to be cut after the second day of tryouts.  I should have spent more time practicing basketball skills too.

  3. They look for good volleyball skills, and attitude. Some coaches may pick you for potential, even if they didn't see everything at tryouts. Wearing a bright shirt helps them remember you... I would say work on your foot work, passing, setting, hitting, and serving. Basic drills can help you prepare. Make sure you talk on the court, and say mine EVERYTIME!!! Good Luck!!!
