Volleyball Update: Canadian Women’s National Team achieved success in first match of Argentinean tour
The Canadian Women’s National Volleyball Team is tuning up their player-line for the Super-four Championship, which is supposed to hit Japan on October 29th, 2010. The two weeks tournament will reach its end on 14th November, 2010 with final results. Like other international teams, Canada is also going through the training and practice phase.
In this connection, Argentine Volleyball Federation organized an event of five-day friendly matches with Canadian Women Team. The matches are scheduled to be held in five different cities of Buenos Aires province. Canadian team is led by Tammy Mahon as captain while the spikers Sara Pavan and Tiffany Dodds are also included in the 14-member team. Canada played the first match with Argentine at newly built Sport Centre of Puan city of Buenos Aires on Monday 30th August, 2010. The visitor Canadian team got their hands on the Puan City Hall Cup by posting 3-2 (16-25, 26-24, 25-23, 16-25, and 15-8) win over the host Argentine.
The friendly fire started in the first set when Argentine served the ball in Canadian court. The long jump-serves landed on target and points’ run began. The game gradually attained pace and teams came up with hard hitting. The fans uproar encouraged the host team to create lead in the game. On the other side of the court, the Canadian team was going through the phase of correction. They changed positions and tried to get right tone for the contest. In the meantime, Argentine took advantage of Canada’s instability and hit more points. They claimed 25-16 victory over Canada in the first set.
The Canadian team learned from the first set defeat and came up with volley strike in the second set, while Argentine was pumped up with the 1st-set victory and continued the attack. Somehow, Canada hit them back and answered every spike smashed by Argentinean side. The game advanced with perfect balance in the second set. Each team struggled to push the other team behind and Canada achieved success in the end. They benefitted from a couple of lose shots and finished the set with 26-24 win.
Afterwards, Canada stay put on the same course and built a lead in the game by capturing another set. They put a new life in the game by hitting wonderful spikes and showed their talent to the host nation. Third set victory was claimed by Canada after a close fight of 25-23 points.
Canada aimed to extend their lead in the fourth-set but Argentine put them in a difficult situation. The powerful straight shots devastated Canadian blockers and scored points for Argentine. The game tied when Argentine equalled the score by winning fourth set.
The equal score of 2-2 brought in a new kick in the game. Both host and visitor teams started with a new spirit but Canada got the edge by taking a lead in fifth set. Argentine failed to get back on the track and lost the set with a margin of 7 points. Canada posted 15-8 win and walked away with the match victory in first friendly-fight with Argentine.
Canadian Sarah Pavan topped the scoring table with a maximum of 21 points while her team-mate Tiffany Todds followed her with 17 points. In Argentinean squad, Emilce Sosa added 19 important points to her team’s score.
The Canadian head coach shared views regarding the tour. Arnd Ludwig said, “Our goals for this tour are to focus on us and on our game without being focused too much on the result. We have worked a lot on our attack using the block. We also worked in minimizing our errors on court and I hope we can transfer the good practices on the court for these matches.”
