Volleyball Update: First victory graces the Dominican Republic at FIVB Women’s World Championship 2010
The Women’s National Volleyball Team of the Dominican Republic (DR) finally saw the face of victory in FIVB Women’s World Championship. The Dominicans earned their first victory by beating Canada in four sets (21-25, 28-26, 25-11, and 25-20) on Wednesday,
3th November, 2010. The Osaka Municipal Central Gymnasium echoed the incredible victory of the Dominican Republic.
The first set of the match posed a different picture as Canadian ladies smashed points after points and picked up a strong lead on Dominican Republic. Anyhow, the Caribbean team demonstrated great effort and tried to narrow the gap of points. Nonetheless,
Canada was three points ahead of Dominican Republic at the second technical timeout (TTO). Canada put pressure on the opposite side with a lead of 16-13 but the Caribbean ladies added consecutive points and tied the score at 16-16. The Canadian side was shocked
with the delivery of unstoppable shots from DR spikers. They changed their strategy and rolled off the ball in Dominican Republic’s half with full power. The DR team struggled to save the set but their effort went futile as Canada posted 25-21 to claim the
first set.
The Dominican Republic Team lost the first set but they kept their hopes alive and didn’t take any pressure of the situation. They returned the ball in enemy’s half and the exchange of fast spikes created frenzy in the game. Elisa Eve of Dominican Republic
had a tough time as she was hit in the face two times. Canada tried to keep an upper-hand on the opponents but Dominican Republic side refused to accept their rule. The score soared up with a close difference of points. Both sides regularly traded the lead
with each other. The coaches had a hard time to formulize the right strategies for their respective teams. Canada was quick to earn points but Dominican Republic stunned them with their outstanding performance. The Dominicans tied the game score at 1-1 by
winning the second set. They thrashed 28-26 victory over Canada.
The second-set victory restored players’ confidence and DR team started the strike with a new zeal. The head coach of DR, Marcos Kwiek was happy with great come-back of his team. He urged them to keep the same level of energy and stay on top of the game.
The Dominican side was thrilled with the sense of victory and worked out great shots in third set. They were able to dominate the Canadian team by producing powerful jump-serves and hitting the ball in right spots. Canada was drafted under pressure, which
made the situation worse for them. They committed too many un-forced mistakes and suffered the damage. The Dominican Republic totally hindered Canadian team’s performance and barred them to score. Canada could only help 11 points in third set, while the Dominican
Republic declared set-victory by achieving the match point (25-11).
The Dominica Republic side was in dominance in the game. They used Prisilla Rivera to attack Canada’s defence line in fourth set. Rivera exhibited great show and stormed the rival’s court with ground-breaking shots. She varied the length of spikes and didn’t
allow Canadian defenders to tackle the ball. Dahiana Burgos also joined hands with Rivera and both players created a lot of trouble for Canada. Dominican team was in commanding position, while Canada failed to return in the game. The Dominicans continued their
momentum and further tightened the screws of Canadian team. It was the first time in championship that Dominican Republic was near the victory. They threw everything in attack and victory finally kissed their feet.
Prisilla Rivera played an influential role in Dominican Republic’s progress. She added 24 valuable points and helped the team to win. Canadian Tiffany Dodds scored 14 points and struggled for her team, which failed to take advantage of her efforts.
