Volleyball Update: Germany beat Thailand in the second round qualifier
The FIVB Women’s World Championship has covered the length of first preliminary round and successful teams have reserved their spots in the second round. Germany’s Women’s National Volleyball Team is also one of the happy squads, which clawed their way to
success and qualified for the second round. Germany played the last match of first round against Thailand on Wednesday, 3rd November, 2010. The German team held off Thailand for 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, and 25-10) victory and scored their fourth win in
Group C. The combat was held in Matsumoto City Gymnasium and around 3250 people gathered to watch the wonderful performance.
Both Germany and Thailand have been promoted in the second round of the championship but Thailand has very low score of 2-3, while Germany has marched in with a score of 4-1. They lost just one battle to United States in one of the pool play matches.
First Set
The German players took their positions in the court and firmly held their spots. They started out really well and dominated Thailand from the beginning. They attacked aggressively and stayed united to tackle the speedy spikes from Thai hitters. Thailand
attacked with Onuma Sittirak who supplied enough power to her spikes but German blockers stood in the way of fire-balls and saved points. Christiane Furst of Germany didn’t allow Thailand to score points. She was very active over the net and threw her hands
up at every shot. Thailand’s attack attempts couldn’t help them raise their score but Germany used them for their own advantage. German squad earned points through Thailand’s reception errors. Thailand relied on the setter, Nootsara Tomkom but she didn’t come
up to expectations.
Germany achieved the early four points and forced Thailand’s coach to call for a timeout. The head coach, Kiattipong Radchatgriengkai didn’t feel good about failing performance of his team. The game resumed in first set and Germany came even stronger on
Thailand. Maren Brinker and Corina Ssuschke developed a great chemistry to dismiss Thailand’s power. Germany worked out brilliant shots and pushed the opponents behind. The first set inched its way to the end line, while Germany led the game. They finished
the set with 25-15 victory.
Second Set
Thailand was deep down in trouble after losing the first set with a good margin of 11 points. The Thai coach made a few changes in squad and called better substitutions in the second set. The setter, Tomkom was replaced by Kamonporn Sukmad on account of
bad-ball handling. However, Germany continued with success and picked up a lead of 8-3 at the first technical timeout.
Thailand threw everything in attack but couldn’t break Germany’s strong defence. The Germans enjoyed a great rhythm and tone in the game. They maintained their lead and remained 8 points ahead of Thailand at the second technical timeout. Germany was ruling
the game by all means. Thailand’s coach couldn’t form the right combination to stop Germans from raising score. Tomkom, the Thailand’s setter was again called in the game after second technical timeout. Anyhow, the changes in Thailand’s team couldn’t work
out for the either. They lost the second straight set by receiving 11-22.
Third Set
Germany opened the third set with great energy but Thailand was dragged under the clouds of uncertainty. Germany added quick points by delivering wonderful spikes and line shots. On the other side, Thailand progressed with low pace and fear of loss lurked
on their shoulders. The players had lost momentum and seemed irresistible to Germany’s score. Mostly, the ball landed in Thailand’s court and provided the advantage to Germans. The third set also ended in Germany’s favour at 25-10 and gave them a chance to
celebrate victory over Thailand.
