Volleyball Update: Italy in the glow of victory in third round of FIVB Championship
Rome, Italy, October 6, 2010- The powerhouse Italy enjoys the news flash after beating France in the semi-final qualifying match of FIVB Championship. Italy posted a score of 25-18, 25-20, 25-27, and 25-19 in four-set bruising battle. It was the last match
of third round in Pool O. Italy delivered a better than perfect performance and clawed its way to the final match against Brazil on Saturday. The defeated French team captured 3rd place in Pool O and moved to Florence to play 9-12 position matches.

Pre-Match Scenario
Italy and France were supposed to give second appearance in the third round. France clashed with United States in the third round opener but couldn’t achieve success. The U.S. team outplayed French guys in straight three sets. France suffered the loss of
their first match and stayed under the clouds of uncertainty for the next contest. They had the potential risk of defeat, while playing against tournament’s favourite team, Italy. Nonetheless, the coach Phillippe Blain urged the team to play with full confidence
and shake off their bad impression.
On the other hand, Italy’s squad had no insecurity. The team was full of life after making a series of triumphs in earlier rounds of the FIVB Championship. Italy played the first match of third round against USA and extended its winning streak to 8-0. The
Italian team was determined to crush French team and clinch semi-final berth.
Match overview
Italy enjoyed a good start in the game and came out very strong in the first set. They served with perfect timing and influenced French side with powerful spikes. Savani Cristian of Italy ruthlessly attacked France’s defence and earned consecutive points.
France played defensively and couldn’t put up with the heavy strike of Italy. Italy remained on the winning course and won the set with Valerio Vermigli’s killing serve 25-18.
The route was defined for Italy and the team quickly scored points in second set. Italians defended with excellent blocking from Sala Andrea and secured the second set with a score of 25-20.
France staged good fight in third set and built a lead of 8-7. Italy hit back and tied at the game at 12-12. Somehow, France managed to steal points from Italy and won the third set by 27-25.
The 4th set came successful for Italy. The hard work of team and support of fans helped them drive through the set with victory. Italy scored 25-19 and won the final set.
Post Match
France’s captain, Oliver Kieferr regretted the loss of an important match and expressed his views, “The team had to react after the defeat with the USA. We played a good match but at the end Italy won. Our goal was to arrive at the tie-break but it did
not happen.”
The coach, Phillippe Blain also disclosed his thoughts after the match. He said,
“We knew prior to the match that we could not win, and the fact that they played in an incredible manner and the public cheered them on continuously helped them out. We encountered a few difficulties, but after managed to regain confidence .Our team is
united and used to playing in unison and we can thank our libero for a great match.  In such a difficult match one need to react, which unfortunately we did not manage to do.”
Likewise, Italy’s head coach Andrea Anastasi also commented, “I am quite content that we will be playing the semi-final in Rome. France gave it their best shot since they knew it was the final match for them. Italy had problems in reception tonight at
the end of the third set and at the beginning of the fourth, but this is probably common to all the teams that have arrived at this point.”
