Volleyball Update: NORCECA- Mexican fans are still waiting for a chance to celebrate victory in Final Four Women’s Cup
The city of Tuxtla Gutierres, Mexico has been the home of volleyball action since the start of Final Four Women’s Volleyball Championship on Tuesday, 21st September, 2010. The on-going volleyball campaign will go till 25th September,
2010. The event is attended by four teams from South American and Caribbean region. Mexico and Argentina represent South America, while Caribbean side includes Dominican Republic and Peru.
The tournament has been planned with two matches on each day. On the opening day of the tournament, Peru and Dominican Republic battled a fight, while Argentina took on Mexico. Peru and Argentina bagged victories in their opening matches. In second day’s
fixtures, Dominican faced Argentina, while Peru came in a clash with hosts Mexico. In the first match, Caribbean ladies sparked and launched their power over Argentina. They claimed a hard-knock victory of 3-1. The second match brought Peru in the limelight
for their consecutive win in the tournament.
Peru vs. Mexico 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, and 25-7)
Peru’s team was all pumped up and thrilled about their good reputation in the tournament. The team started the first set with a great style. The strong serves and floaters empowered them in the guest courts of Mexico. They didn’t face much difficulty in
picking up a lead in the game. They were known for their outstanding attack techniques and swift bump-passes. As predicted by many in the sports hall, Peru dismissed Mexicans in the first set and posted 25-12 victory.
The Peruvian team had the advantage of their physique and stature. They took full advantage of it and influenced the challenger team. Mexicans reacted in the second set and attempted to block Peruvian spikes. Most of the shots cruised past their heads but
they also got success in some of their attempts. They had better run in second set but still it was not enough to pose a threat to Peru’s team. The situation was more favourable for visiting team and they took the game away from the Mexico. Second set ended
with 25-16 on the scoreboard and Peru was on successful side.
Peru needed one more set to declare a win over Mexico. They started the strike in usual style and put pressure on South American team. The Team Mexico really slowed down in third set and failed to put up with fierce attack from Peruvian players. Mexico’s
team could only score 7 points in third set and accepted defeat. Peru extended their winning streak by achieving success in their second match.
Hopes and Comments
Mexican captain, Yazmin Hernández couldn’t help leaking regret for a bad performance in their second match. She regretted that they could bring a happy moment for the local fans but she defended her position by commenting that,
“Peru is a very strong team, well prepared and more experienced. Anyway we went out to the court and did our best, and to try to defend despite their height.” Moreover, the head coach, Alfredo Bernal expressed the similar thoughts. He said, “We
faced a very strong, high quality team that plays a style very complicated for us, they are professional players while we have local leagues players, but our main goal is to keep on learning on the court.”
Peruvian captain, Leyla Chihuan led her team in great way and played her role in the victory. She urged the Mexican players to take it as a learning experience and don’t be too much bothered. She said,
“There are no small teams, we take every match seriously, Mexico is a team with very young players, but if they work correctly they can be a great team.”
