Volleyball Update: Peru scores third victory in Final Four Women’s Volleyball Cup, Mexico
Peru continued with success in their third match against Argentina on Thursday, 23rd September, 2010. The match was played in Chiapas Polyforum Sports Hall in Tuxtla Gutierres, Mexico. Peruvian players remained consistent in their approach and
repeated their good performance in consecutive third match. The level of resistance was high from Argentina but Peru managed to form good combinations in order to dismantle Argentinean power and finally defeated them. Argentina received 1-3 (28-26, 16-25,
14-25, and 21-25) defeat from Peru.
Peru was put up with teams from Dominican Republic and hosts Mexico in the first two matches. The Peruvian ladies got a good chance to apply their techniques and tricks in the game to dismiss their opponents. The success put them in a flow and rhythm to
generate good pace in their future games.
First Set
Both teams had played two matches each and Peru was more successful than Argentina. Therefore, Argentina was in a desperate need to hit some nice volleys and shed off their bad impression. They started the match with a lead of 2-1. Argentina served an ace
to extend their lead but Peruvian defence expert handled the ball with ease. Peru also started the attack and raised their points. Argentina responded with good blocks but couldn’t save the next point on account of net violation. The captain girl of Argentina,
Antonela Curatola maintained good balance among players and kept them motivated. The score was rapidly soaring up. In the meantime, Argentinean players connected two consecutive kills and captured the first set 26-24.
Second Set
It was the first time in match that Peru lost a set. After dropping first set, the team was infuriated. Jessenia Uceda and Karla Ortiz of Peru came forward to teach Argentina a lesson. The combo of these two players stormed Argentinean court with swift aces
and under-hand shots. Peru grabbed lead over Argentina and put more pressure on the opposing team. Argentinean players tried to stay in the game but Peruvians attackers shook them with a delivery of devastating spikes. The second set ended with a score of
25-16, while Peru levelled the game at 1-1.
Third Set
Leyla Chihuan, the captain of Peru’s squad urged her team to keep up the good work and stay united. The wonderful plan of back-row attack by Peru’s team earned them a lead in third set. The team was back in business after winning the second set. Tanya Acosta
of Argentina tried to become a trouble maker for Peru but they had the solution in hand. Peruvian blockers did an amazing job to stop the spears from Argentinean side. Moreover, Peru scored three un-answered points and took the game away from Argentina. The
gap of points further stretched at the end of third set and Peru claimed set-win (25-14).
Fourth Set
Peru had got an edge in the game by 2-1. They were in the leading role and turned the game in their favour. Nonetheless, Argentina wanted to avail the chance to tie the game by winning fourth set. They brought their best skills in the game and fought for
good score. Peru killed a few of their attack attempts and kept an upper hand on Argentina. Peru picked up victory in fourth set with the help of 25-21 and claimed their third consecutive win in the tournament.
The captain of victorious team expressed her views after the match. She said,
“This will help us a lot in our preparation to the World Championship. We know ourselves very good as a team and have played very solid game, and as they (the Argentineans) said, the real winners of this match were the fans.”
