Volleyball Update: Review of 5-8 positions of FIVB Women’s World Championship 2010
The 16th FIVB Women’s World Championship 2010 welcomed 24 teams from around the world. The event ran from October 29 to November 14th, 2010 in several cities of Japan. At the end of this wonderful volleyball campaign, the teams settled
in different spots according to their performance. Half of the teams captured the last 12 spots with the completion of first two rounds of the tournament, while the final round game promoted the teams in top-12 slots. The final round covered its lengths in
three segments. The first leg of final round involved teams for 1-4, while next four teams contested their abilities for 5-8 positions in the second leg. The following four teams qualified for the 5-8 competitions:
Serbia Italy Germany Turkey
Likewise, the 9-12 positions competitions involved another four teams, which captured their positions after proving their endeavor.
Germany vs. Turkey 2-3 (23-25, 18-25, 25-14, 25-20, and 11-15)
In the first 5-8 semi-final, Germany played against Turkey. Both sides contested their abilities and staged a great performance. Turkey opened the match with strong serves and took advantage over Germans on account of good passing between players. Germany,
on the other hand, was equipped with good defense expert. Christiane Furst did a great job blocking over the net. However, Germany lost the first set with narrow gap of points. Turkey continued with success in the following set and used the competitive advantage
of first-set victory. Germany failed to stop Turkish spikers and another set slipped from their hands.
After dropping two sets in a row, Germany made a great come-back and dug up victory in third set. German team struggled with new spirit and also claimed the fourth set. The final set of the game was full of thrill as both sides tried their best to capture
success in decisive set. Ultimately Turkish appeared as winners and pushed Germany behind. Turkey earned a spot in the final for 5th position.
Serbia vs. Italy 0-3 (20-25, 15-25, and 22-25)
The second semi-final in ‘5-8’ category was held on Saturday, November 13 in Tokyo, Japan. The Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium hosted the fabulous match. Italy completely dominated the other side with a delivery of convincing shots. The first set of the match
was overwhelmed by Simona Gioli’s powerful serves and stunning spikes. Italy remained ahead in the points’ run and claimed first set with 5-point margin. Serbia suffered more damage in the following set as Italy dragged them under pressure. Too many ball reception
errors caused Serbia another defeat in second set. However, they fought bravely to save their reputation in third set but Italy’s side had attained much stronger spot then. They didn’t allow Serbs to stay on their feet and captured the match with a score of
3-0. Italy reserved a berth in the final showdown of 5thposition of FIVB Women’s World Championship.
Italy vs. Turkey 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, and 25-21)
The two contenders for the 5th position clashed on Sunday, November 14, 2010 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. The grueling battle continued for 1 hour and 11 minutes and finally Italy proved to be too good for 5th position. Turkey
put up a great fight, especially in first and final round but couldn’t achieve the desired results. Turkey lost the first set by a minor difference of two points. The situation remained same in the second set and Italy finished with better score. Despite of
great effort, Italy lost the third set as well.
Serbia vs. Germany 1-3 (25-20, 21-25, 22-25, and 23-25)
The unsuccessful teams of 5-8 semi-finals met in the 7th position on Sunday. The Serbs opened the game with first-set victory but lost the momentum in following sets. Germans launched their authority over Serbs in last three sets and
claimed match victory.
At the end of 5-8 competitions, the team settled in their respective slots as followed:
5th Position – Italy 6th Position – Turkey 7th Position – Germany 8th Position - Serbia
