Volleyball Update: Review of 9-12 positions of FIVB Women’s World Championship 2010
The fun-packed activity of FIVB Women’s Volleyball rounded off on Sunday, 14th November, 2010 in Japan. The final round of the championship was kicked off with the top 12 teams on Saturday and completed its run on Sunday. The teams
which qualified for the main draw of the 9-12 positions were as follows:
Poland The Netherlands Cuba China
The Yoyogi National Stadium in Tokyo, Japan hosted the 9-12 matches. In the first semi-final on Saturday, November 13, Poland was challenged by Netherlands. The Polish team performed better and clinched a berth in the final for 9th position by
defeating Dutch team. Quite similarly, Cuban ladies clashed with China’s team on the same day. The second semi-final revealed China as victorious team and promoted Chinese squad in the final showdown with Poland. The final match was played on Sunday and Poland
successfully settled for 9th position by defeating China. On the other hand, the semi-final losers competed for the 11th and 12 positions. Dutch team outplayed Cuba and finished in the 11th spot.
Poland vs. Netherlands 3-2 (24-26, 25-22, 25-22, 19-25, and 15-9)
In the first semi-final competition, Dutch team came strong on Poland and attacked with Glinka-Mogentale, while Ingrid Visser of Netherlands showed wonderful blocking. Both sides put up great fight but Dutch side captured the first set. Poland reacted spontaneously
and levelled the score by grabbing second set victory. Polish team continued with success and posted another set-win over Netherlands to take a lead in the game. However, Dutch team sparked on the scene and claimed fourth set. The play was stretched to fifth
set after a tie of 2-2. Finally Poland proved to be too good for victory and clawed its way to the final match.
China vs. Cuba 3-1 (16-25, 25-22, 25-19, and 25-22)
Second semi-final for 9-12 positions featured China and Cuba. The Caribbean ladies from Cuba opened the match with great vibe. They ousted China with first set victory. Nonetheless, the resilient rival unfolded itself in the following sets. China started
the hard-hitting and showed no mercy to the Cuban team. China captured the second set to level the game-score. Afterwards, they kept on the winning track and got their hands on victory by claiming straight sets. China moved to the important final for 9th
position of the FIVB Women’s World Championship 2010.
Poland vs. China 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, and 25-22)
The two finalists came face-to-face on Sunday and played with best of their tactics. The first set of the game was a close fight as the score shifted with a narrow gap of points. Luck favoured Poland and provided them an edge to claim the first set. The
victory put them in a great rhythm and Polish team didn’t allow China to hinder their performance. Poland captured the second consecutive set. China tried to subdue Poland but failed to put up with the heavy strike of Polish hitters. They worked out nice strong
serves and pushed China behind the attack line. Poland settled for the 9th position by posting straight sets’ victory in the final encounter, while China had to be content with 10th position in the overall rankings of FIVB Women’s World
Championship 2010.
Netherlands vs. Cuba 3-0 (32-30, 25-23, and 25-17)
The last match of 9-12 category brought Netherlands and Cuba together. The game was simply a spectacular show of volleyball. The two teams staged a point-to-point battle. First set of the match put their abilities to a real test. After a great fight, Dutch
team managed to defeat Cuba with a two-point lead. The second set resembled with the first set and ended in Netherlands’ favour with two-point margin. The Dutch team kept an upper hand on Cuba and secured the third set, in order to declare victory.
At the end of ‘9-12’ round, the four contestants took their positions as follows:
9th Position – Poland
10th Position – China
11th Position – Netherlands
12th Position – Cuba
